Week of October 19 – 23

What a beautiful fall weekend!  I hope everyone had a great weekend!  Here is a look at our week ahead:

Mrs. Jacobsen’s Homeroom

  • Morning Meetings (8:00 – 8:15):   We will continue to build our classroom community with activities and questions that will allow us to get to know our classmates better.
  • Small Group Reading Block (9:55 – 10:30):  This week we will begin studying a new story text – The Legend of Sleepy Hollow I will introduce the story on Monday and we will read the story altogether during class.  I will be be using this story text to discuss story elements and go over comprehension strategies.  Due to our short 30-minute reading block, I will be meeting with one or two small groups per day.  When students are not meeting with me in their small group, they MUST be in the “Lobby” on Microsoft Teams so I can still see their name.  While in the “Lobby” they will be working on their Reading Rotations Choice Menu assignment.  All students in 5th grade will have the same choice menu assignments.  The assignments in this menu will consist of reading, writing, and social studies activities.
  • On Tuesday students will receive their new Wordly Wise Lesson 3 words.  They will have activities to complete throughout the next 2 weeks, and will take the lesson 3 quiz the following Friday, 10/30.
  • Class Read-Aloud:  I will also continue to read aloud from our class novel, Because of Mr. Terupt, at the end of each day.

Math This Week:

  • Math 5:

    • During math this week we will be reviewing computation skills, especially multiplication and division.  We will spend time practicing 3 digit times 2 digit multiplication and long division.  We will also spend time solving word problems and discussing the strategies we used.
  • Math 5/6:

    • This week we will continue our study of exponents (SOL 6.4).  As we learn about exponents, students will begin using the “E” in PEMDAS and solving expressions with this new step.  Each student has an “Exponents Digital Notebook” that is saved in their Google Drive.  We will go over the notes in class, and students will have daily assignments to help them practice these types of problems.  There are also papers from last week’s Learning Packet that will provide additional practice with this unit.

Please contact me with any questions.  Thank you for your continued support!  Looking forward to a great week!

What’s Happening in 5th Grade? Week 3 Updates! Week of 9/21 – 9/25

Hello, everyone!

I hope that everyone has had a wonderful weekend!  I would first like to say how incredibly proud I am of all of my students!  These first 2 weeks of virtual learning have been challenging and a bit confusing for everyone… including me!  Nobody should feel bad if this has been difficult for them.  The students truly have been working hard and giving it their best effort to stay engaged and participate in our lessons.  We are all making mistakes right now, and as I have told them, as long as they are working hard and trying, it’s ok to make mistakes right now.   Every day we are learning and improving with our virtual learning.  As I have told the students in our class meetings, they may send me messages on Schoology anytime with questions and concerns they have.  Many of them have been taking advantage of this!  It’s a great way for them to take ownership of their learning and become more independent.  Great job, 5th graders!

If you have not done so, please encourage your child to keep their video on during our class meetings.  This will allow me to monitor their behavior and get a feeling as to if they are attending to our lesson.  When students do not have their video on, I am not able to assess whether they are engaged and focused on our instruction.  Thank you for your help with this.  I understand that not all students are at home, and this can be a difficult situation to be able to monitor.  My son in 1st grade is at daycare all day doing his virtual learning, and I completely understand not knowing everything that is happening.  If I can help at all, please let me know.

I will be posting a blog update weekly on this site – usually on Sundays (if you don’t see an update on Sunday, check back on Monday).  I will divide the blog update into 2 sections – announcements for my Homeroom class, and announcements for the Math courses.  All of the students in my homeroom, Mrs. McGee’s homeroom, and Mrs. Blankenship’s homeroom will be in my math classes.  Regardless if your child is enrolled in Math 5 or in Math 5/6, they will be in class with their entire Homeroom class.

What’s Happening This Week in Mrs. Jacobsen’s Homeroom?

  • “Morning Meetings” (8:00 – 8:15): This week, we will spend our “Morning Meetings” finishing up sharing our “All About Me” presentations.  I have enjoyed learning so much about my students in these presentations!  🙂
  • Small Group Reading Block (9:55 – 10:30): I will continue assessing students individually for their reading level.  As we did last week, when students are not meeting with me one-on-one, they MUST be in the “Waiting Room” on Microsoft Teams so I can see them.  While in the “Waiting Room,” they will be working on their Reading Rotations Choice Menu assignment.  All students in 5th grade will have the same choice menu assignments.  The assignments in this menu consist of reading, writing, and social studies activities.
  • Resources (12:30 -1:00):  As a reminder, here is our resource schedule:
    • Monday – HLP block
    • Tuesday – P.E.
    • Wednesday – Art
    • Thursday – Music
    • Friday – Library

What’s Happening This Week in Math?

We will complete our unit on Prime/Composite & Even/Odd this week (SOL 5.3a & b).  We have spent the first 2 weeks learning about how to determine what numbers are prime and composite, and even and odd.   We learned that if you divide any number by 2, 3, 5, & 7 it will help us find out!  We also learned divisibility rules to help us understand numbers.  Be sure to ask your child if they can name some of the helpful rules we learned.  In Schoology, your child has notes located in their Math course – in their “Math Interactive Digital Notebook.” There are also other documents in their Math course that students may want to look over while going over this unit.

Students will take the 5.3 Prime/Composite & Even/Odd Test on Tuesday, 9/22.  Students will take the test on the computer on a program called Performance Matters.  This is a computer program very similar to PowerTest that they are used to using from last year.

Later in the week, we will begin our new unit on Integers (SOL 6.3).  This is not required math for students in Math 5, but is required for students in Math 5/6.

Important Reminders:

  • Packet Pick-Up is tomorrow, Monday 9/21 from 1-3 pm.  Mrs. Smith sent out a message last week about our next packet pick-up tomorrow at Short Pump.  You will find math, science, and reading/language papers in this packet.  We will be using these papers in class.  If you are unable to pick-up these papers, please let me know and I will send you the PDF of the packet.
  • Back to School Night is this Thursday, 9/24.  5th grade will be holding our meeting at 6:30 pm.  You will be signing into a Microsoft Team meeting with myself, Mrs. McGee, and Mrs. Blankenship as we discuss our 5th grade policies for our 3 classes.  Because your child has all 3 teachers during the day, we will be presenting together.  We will send out the Teams Meeting link later in the week.  Stay tuned!
  • You can subscribe to this blog!  If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of this page, you can enter your email address to subscribe to my blog.  Every time I post an update, you will receive an email and you can read the update directly in your email.

Thank you for ALL of your support this year!  I know this is different and overwhelming at times.  I am here to support you!

~Mrs. Jacobsen

“Episode 4” Distance Learning Activities: May 26 – June 12

Distance Learning Schedule: “Episode 4- Season Finale!” May 26 – June 12

ARE THERE ANY BIG CHANGES WITH EPISODE 4?

Yes!  Episode 4 is the “Season Finale” for this school year!  This episode will cover 3 weeks, instead of 2 weeks.  The format of the activities is the same as the previous episodes.  However, during the last 2 weeks of school, we will only have one class meeting per week.  In addition, throughout the weeks of June 1st and June 8th, I will be scheduling an individual Zoom meeting with each student.  The meeting with your child will last about 10 minutes.  Each student and I will discuss their 4th grade year, and we will be closing out the school year together.  It will be wonderful to be able to speak with each student individually before the end of the school year!

*I will be sending out an email this week with your child’s specific day and time that I have assigned.  If this time does not work for your child, please email me and let me know so I can schedule a different time that works for you.

The Henrico “EDFLIX” website with both the choice board assignments and the Performance Task can be found here:

https://sites.google.com/henrico.k12.va.us/mockupedflix/elementary/4th?authuser=0

OR students can go to Clever and click on the “EdFlix” icon to find the 4th grade materials.

*Underneath the Performance Task and the Choice Board are some additional links available to students, including “Learning & Practice,” “Bonus Math & Reading Episodes,” and “Book Picks.”  These are great resources!

IS THERE ANYTHING NEW MY CHILD NEEDS TO KNOW FOR THIS EPISODE?

Nothing new!  As we did for the last few classes, please encourage your child to bring a dry erase board and marker or some paper and a marker to our Zoom meetings to hold up to the computer.  I can see their answers really well as long as they are written large and clear.  Writing with a marker seems to work best.  I have a harder time reading pencil on the computer screen, so if they are using a pencil just have them write as large and dark as possible.

SHOULD MY CHILD TURN THEIR ASSIGNMENTS IN THE SAME WAY?

Yes!  The easiest way for me to comment on assignments is if they are sent to me in a Google Doc or Google Slides. Sharing and posting an assignment through a Flipgrid video also works great!  I can comment on the videos, and students can see my feedback.

Mrs. Jacobsen’s email address:  cmjacobsen@henrico.k12.va.us

Flipgrid:  There is a new Flipgrid link for Episode 4 assignments. Once on Flipgrid, students will be able to select from a list of different “Topics” (assignments) to click on, and can record a video from there to share on the flipgrid.

EPISODE 4 SCHEDULE

Week of 5/26 – 5/29:  NO CHANGE

However, during the last 2 weeks we will only meet one time per week.

  • Tuesday 6/2 at 1:00 pm

  • Tuesday 6/9 at 1:00 pm

*As stated above, throughout the weeks of June 1 and June 8, I will be scheduling an individual Zoom meeting with each student.  These will be short meetings that last about 10 minutes.  Each student and I will be discussing their 4th grade year, and we will be closing out the school year together.

I will be sending out an email with your child’s specific day and time that I have assigned.  If this time does not work for your child, please email me and let me know so I can schedule a different time that works for you.

A FEW REMINDERS:

ACCESS TO SCHOOLOGY

I have been adding some assignments to Schoology.  Your child can access their Schoology account through Clever.

Once your child is in Schoology, choose the correct course to find and click on the assignment.

WHAT IF MY CHILD CANNOT ATTEND ALL OF THE ZOOM SESSIONS?

That is ok!  I understand our daily lives are very different right now, so your child may not be able to attend all Zoom sessions.  As long as your child sends me their activities through Google or Flipgrid I will still get back to them with feedback about their progress.

WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS MORE WORK THAN WHAT IS EXPECTED IN THE SCHEDULE?

If your child wants additional activities to complete, they may continue to go back to Henrico’s Choice Board and complete as many additional activities as they like.  I will continue to provide feedback on these extra activities if they are sent to me through Google.

Also, as I stated above, there are a variety of new resources available on the Henrico EDFlix link. These include:

Virginia Studies Information for You!

FREE Access to “Virginia Studies Weekly” Newspaper for Students!

In class on Friday, I shared a wonderful resource with students called “Virginia Studies Weekly.”  These are great resources to use to read and learn about Virginia history after the Civil War, up until the present day.  I truly believe that the 20th century Virginia information is very important to learn in order to understand our world today.

The link below contains a folder for each “week” with the newspaper that students can read, as well as optional worksheets and quizzes.

I hope your child will take advantage of this great free resource!  Let me know if you have any questions!

I think Tuesday’s lessons about the American Revolution look very interesting!  🙂

Tuesday, May 19:  Spies, Women and Supplies

When most people think about the American Revolution, they think of the Declaration of Independence, epic battles, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Join us on Tuesday, May 19, for  “Spies, Women and Supplies,” a three-part series live from the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown to explore why without American spies, the many and varied contributions of women, and the supplying of the Continental Army, the outcome might have been different. Pick one or participate in all, click on the links below to access each session on Zoom – limited to 1,000 viewers and may require short download.

10 a.m. EDT: Espionage
Click Here to Watch Live & Enter Password 1781
“Washington did not really outfight the British. He simply out-spied us.” As one defeated British officer famously observed, espionage was a valuable tool for the Continental Army. Sometimes referred to as a great “spymaster”, George Washington used all manners of resources to find success during the American Revolution. Learn how Washington used the power of information to help win the war. Ask yourself, who would make a good spy? What are the consequences? How do you create code in a world without computers?

11 a.m. EDT: Women of the American Revolution
Click Here to Watch Live & Enter Password 1781
“I desire you would remember the ladies.” Abigail Adams famously wrote those words to her husband, John Adams, in 1776. Have we remembered the ladies? The contributions of women during the American Revolution are as wide and varied as the circumstances in which they lived. What can women with status like Martha Washington do? What about the young and poor with no safe home? Where will they go? How can women help the Continental Army? Will women take up arms? Join us on a woman’s journey through a Continental Army Encampment and learn about the different roles they took during the war.

12 p.m. EDT: Supplying the Army
Click Here to Watch Live & Enter Password 1781
What do you need to raise an Army from scratch? And how do you pay for it all? Once you have the supplies you need, how will you move the men and supplies? A visit to the Quartermaster’s tent will offer some perspective on the variety of supplies the army needed to secure during the American Revolution and the economics involved in the process.

Thursday, May 21:  Powhatan Life

Join us on Thursday, May 21, for  “Powhatan Life,” a three-part series live from Jamestown Settlement to explore aspects of everyday Powhatan life. We’ll begin by learning about the importance of corn to the Powhatan and how it was processed. We’ll then explore Powhatan ornamentation as a form of expression, learning about how they used local and traded objects. At noon, we’ll conclude with a look at how the Powhatan used natural resources as supplies in making baskets. Pick one or participate in all, click on the links below to access each session on Zoom – limited to 1,000 viewers and may require short download.

10 a.m. EDT: Foodways
Click Here to Watch Live & Enter Password 1607
The Powhatan hunted, gathered, fished and grew a wide variety of different types of foods, the most prominent being corn. Discover the many uses of corn and the importance of corn by-products such as hominy.

11 a.m. EDT: Ornamentation
Click Here to Watch Live & Enter Password 1607
Ornamentation is the art of personal expression; it’s how people choose to adorn and decorate themselves. The Powhatan and other Eastern Woodlands people used a rich variety of personal decoration in their everyday lives, items that were made from materials found locally or traded for with other tribes or with Europeans. Learn about these materials and the products made by Powhatan people in early 17th-century Virginia.

12 p.m. EDT: Weaving
Click Here to Watch Live & Enter Password 1607
The Powhatan used their natural environment to create useful, everyday household items including rope, mats, fish nets and baskets. Learn about some of these natural materials (plants like yucca, dogbane and cedar bark) and the most prominent style of Powhatan weaving, which today is called twining. The lightweight sturdy containers made by twining were a staple in every Powhatan household and were used for storing, transporting goods, and gathering.

Dear Parents,

I hope that you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend!  🙂

“Episode 3” is here!  Below is the information and due dates for the Episode 3 activities and class sessions.  I have also shared this information in a Google Doc with students.

Flipgrid:  This is a new link for Episode 3 assignments!  To access our class’s Flipgrid for Episode 3, use the link I have shared in the Google doc.  From there students will be able to select from a list of different “Topics” (assignments) to click on, and can record a video from there to share on the Flipgrid.

I AM DISPLAYING THE EPISODE 3 SCHEDULE DIFFERENTLY!

A FEW REMINDERS:

  • Family STEAM
  • Independent Learning & Practice
  • Reading & Math Bonus Episodes
  • Book Picks
  • Social Emotional Learning
  • Family Resources

As this continues to be a work in progress, thank you so much in advance for your support.  Let me know if you have questions.

Please continue to stay safe and healthy!  I miss all of my students very much!

“Episode 2” Distance Learning Activities: April 27 – May 8

Distance Learning Schedule: “Episode 2” (April 27 – May 8)

WHAT IS THIS?

Below is the distance learning schedule for our 2nd “Episode,” which spans the next 2 weeks.  As you know, these activities are not mandatory, but I am hoping your child will be excited to meet with the class over Zoom each week to discuss their progress!

WHAT DOES MY CHILD DO?

For this “Episode” your child will be working through a Choice Board created by Henrico Specialists, and will also be working through a Performance Task.  Your child needs to look at my schedule below to see the due dates for my chosen activities for this Episode.

The Henrico “EDFLIX” website with both the choice board assignments and the Performance Task can be found here:

https://sites.google.com/henrico.k12.va.us/mockupedflix/elementary/4th?authuser=0

Please understand that you do NOT need to complete every box on the Choice Board- only the ones I have listed in our schedule. The goal is for students to stay up to date with my schedule in order to be able to receive comments from me on their work, and potentially share about their progress during our Zoom meetings.

HOW DOES MY CHILD TURN IN ASSIGNMENTS?

To “turn in” completed activities, students can send me a Google Doc or Google Slides of their assignments when/before they are due, so I can virtually comment on their progress. They can complete the assignment in a Google Doc or a Google Slide, or complete it on a separate sheet of paper and take a picture of it to upload into a doc to send to me.  I do not want this to be a stressful situation for anyone, so please feel free to do what works best for your child and your family.

             Mrs. Jacobsen’s email address:  cmjacobsen@henrico.k12.va.us

Flipgrid:  Another way for students to turn in work could be to record a short video of themselves holding up their assignment and reading it/explaining it to me.  I am able to share my feedback on their flipgrid videos, so this is a great way for students to share their work with me.  It’s also fun!  🙂  I have shared the Flipgrid link in the Google Document I sent out to students.

From there you will be able to select from a list of different “Topics” (assignments) to click on, and you can record your video from there to share on the flipgrid.  I think it will be a fun way for students to get a chance to record and share their ideas with me and their classmates.

*I will not be able to call on every student to share his/her work during our Zoom meetings, so I would love to give your child personal feedback on their assignments ahead of time in case they do not have a chance to share during the Zoom meeting.

WHAT DOES THE ZOOM SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?

We will be meeting for about 90 minutes per week, so I have chosen to divide that into two 45-minute sessions.  I will also be home-schooling my 2 children, while Mr. Jacobsen will be doing distance learning lessons with his middle school classes, so we are going to do our best to juggle this “new normal.”  I hope this schedule will work for your child and your household.  Please know these are not mandatory sessions, so I understand if conflicts arise.  I truly hope to see all of my wonderful students as much as possible!  Our class Zoom meeting information was shared in the Google Document I sent out.

As this is a work in progress, I would like to thank you very much in advance for your support.  Let me know if you have questions!  Please continue to stay safe!
