Wow, we are quickly approaching the close of the school year! While we are all very excited, we still have more to learn, as well as some fun activities planned for this special time of year for our 5th graders. Please be sure to read over weekly updates and emails to stay “in the know!”
We had an absolute blast and learned so much on our field trip to the Virginia Living Museum last Thursday! Thank you for all your assistance in making this a memorable trip for the students, and a very special thank you to our wonderful chaperones!

GAES Author Visit: So exciting! GAES 3-5 graders have the wonderful opportunity for an author’s visit from Magaret Peterson Haddix! She is the author of the novel study we completed earlier in the year! Math: We will wrap up our unit on metric conversions and then review elapsed time. Our test on elapsed time is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23. We will also be working on evaluating and creating various schedules to reinforce our understanding of elapsed time.
We will begin a fun project this week to reinforce our measurement unit – Volume Zoo! Please send in various size boxes.
Reading/English: We will continue to read our class novel, Restart and practice the reading strategies we have learned this year. We will also be completing some fun activities incorporating our memories of 5th grade!
Our Vocabulary List #13 is all about wonderful describing words!
Students will begin composing a friendly letter to rising 5th graders giving words of advice on how to have a successful 5th grade year.
Social Studies: We will wrap up our study of the West Region of the United States this week. Students brought home a West Region Study Guide last Wednesday to help prepare for the test on this region scheduled for Wednesday, 5/24. Completion of the study guide is expected and is imperative to preparing for the test. The study guide is due the day of the test and counts toward the homework grade. We will begin a fun, in-class project to help reinforce all that we have learned about the West Region.
Science: This week we will judge our fabulous Wildflower STEAM creations making sure they met all of our design criteria.
