We enjoyed the first week of fall! The weather this week certainly put us into the fall state of mind.

It was so nice seeing everyone who was able to attend Back to School Night on Thursday. It was great to share with you all that your child will be learning during their 5th grade year. If you were not able to attend, no worries as I will be emailing the presentation that was shared. Feel free to reach out to me should you have any questions.

Just a friendly reminder to please check to ensure that your child is completing daily homework assignments. This daily practice is so important to your child’s success. It also allows me to check for student understanding of the material. Each day students will have homework assignments in math, reading, and English to complete. Occasionally, they will have social studies or science. Students write down their homework assignments each morning in the homework planner and it can also be found on the Schoology calendar and the daily folders in Schoology.

Math 5/6: I’m looking forward to meeting  with my 5/6 group this week! We will be covering a few sixth grade topics:  integers, absolute value, and exponents! We will be reviewing these topics in our small group, and students have a folder with websites and practice files in the Student Resource folder to use during independent station time.

Writing: We will begin to use our digital seed writing journal to come up with great ideas to expand our thoughts based on the read aloud of Because of Mr. Terupt

Reading: We will continue discussing plot and character traits and applying these skills in books we are reading. The students continued to be enthralled with our read aloud of Because of Mr. Terupt. Our weekly vocabulary quizzes will be on Friday. This weeks’ words are all about sports (Vocabulary #2) !

Science: We are moving into our 4th grade review unit on the Earth, Moon, and Sun this week! Students will have an open-notes quiz on Thursday, 9/30. Please remind your child to review the materials in their science notebook as well as the Student Resources folder that includes the Unit Study Guide and the Digital Notebook. These are all wonderful tools for developing a better understanding of the material being covered.

Social Studies: This week will continue to focus on the history of Henrico. Students will have a fun postcard project to create in class based on the Henricus settlement in 1611 and then we will examine how Henrico has grown and changed. Students are learning so much about the area in which they live!
