September 19, 2021

We had another fabulous week in the “Lyons’ Den!” The students are doing a great job with the routines, rules, and expectations.

Important Information:

  • We are so excited to connect with you for back to school night on Thursday, September 23. You will receive an email from your child’s teacher with a Teams link later this week. Please login and make sure you are muted. There are 3 times to choose from. Each session will discuss the same information.

  • Please make sure your child is bringing back their Chromebook daily and that it is charged. Chromebooks are being used in class for assignments and will be used at home starting next week for homework. If a Chromebook is left at home it is the students responsibility to make up all classwork.

  • Masks are required to be worn daily when not eating or drinking. Please provide an extra mask in your child’s backpack.

  • If your child is sick please send me an email and we will let the appropriate people know. If it is a long term illness your child will use Schoology to access work using the daily folders. We will unpublish each day and either move to the next day OR to Past Weeks, depending on the type of assignments.

  • Please use the Study Guide folder in Student Resources along with student notebooks.

  • Weekly newsletters will be sent/added to weekly. For the first few weeks we will email the newsletter directly, as well as add and store them in Schoology-Family Resources-Newsletters

  • Please make sure that you are receiving and reading the Cub Family News sent by Mrs. Pruden each Sunday.  It contains important updates and information for families. If you are not receiving this information please call the school office at (804)756-3040 to let them know.

  • We will continue to perform individual reading assessments over the next few weeks. These assessments will help gauge what reading skills your child needs assistance or enrichment with this year.  They will also assist in forming small groups to work with children in a capacity outside of whole class instruction and tailor mini-lessons to their needs.

Math: We will finish up prime and composite this week, with a quiz on that and reviewing odd and even numbers on Wednesday. The quiz will include some word problems with basic computation, so please continue to review those multiplication facts as they are the building blocks for most of our math lessons!

We will then move on to order of operations. Please have your child refer to their Math Study Guide, either the paper copy from their Learning Kit or the digital version in the Student Resources folder. Don’t forget you can always get a preview of our math topics using the PortaPortal! Here is an Order of Operations song from our PortaPortal: Order of Operations Rap

Reading: We will focus on conflict and how character conflict affects plot this coming week in Reading. Towards the end of the week we will discuss character traits. I will also continue reading aloud Because of Mr. Terupt. The students are so excited to learn what happens next in his classroom!

Our first vocabulary quizzes on vocabulary packet #1 (Vocabulary List #1)  will take place this Friday, 9/24. After this week the routine will be that each Monday students will get a new word study list and Friday they will have two quizzes, one on using the word correctly and one on selecting the correctly spelled version of the vocabulary word. This will be a weekly routine for the rest of the school year. Students are given time in class to complete independent activities of their choice aimed at helping them learn their words. They also have nightly homework pages to do that we go over in class. However, your child needs to spend time reviewing these words every night so they are prepared for the Friday quizzes.

Science: This week in science we will wrap up our review unit on the solar system!! Students will create a flip grid or slideshow to solidify their knowledge of the solar system and planets!

Social Studies: We will begin to wrap up Henrico’s geography and move on to the early history of our county.  Students will get to create a digital or hand illustrated postcard illustrating what life was like on the original settlement of Henricus. Students will also have the option of working on a Henrico STEAM map activity! I can’t wait to see what they come up with. Have them share theirs with you!

Enjoy the beautiful weekend!
