We had a wonderful week! We enjoyed celebrating poetry and library month. I especially enjoyed hearing some of the students’ favorite poems on Thursday’s “Poetry in my Pocket.” We will continue with some fun poetry activities in the coming weeks.
These next few weeks we will be busy learning about new topics, as well as reviewing previously learned material. It’s imperative that your child is present and focused during instruction and completing the practice activities and homework assignments so that they are demonstrating understanding and are well prepared for 6th grade. This includes asynchronous assignments or activities on Wellness Wednesdays.
As the testing window nears, there will be a change in schedule for the 3 weeks we have SOL tests. Any student that is not participating in the SOL will be assigned asynchronous work for both Tuesday and Wednesday. There will not be a Teams meeting on either day as we will be administering the state tests to our in person and virtual students. Mrs. Pruden will be sharing more details in her weekly update, but if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or join the office hours on Teams on Wednesday 10:00 – 10:30.

Math: In math we will wrap up our unit on Equivalent Measures and the metric system this week. A quiz on this material will be on Friday, May 7th. Be sure to refer to the student resource folder and the portaportal sites to review these concepts in preparation for the quiz. We will begin our final unit in math on elapsed time later this week.
Reading: We will spend time reviewing previously taught concepts in reading and English this week. Our areas of focus will be on main idea and supporting details, text structures (organizational patterns), context clues, character traits, making inferences, and elements of plot. We will not have our weekly vocabulary this week.
Science: The solar system will continue to be our focus in science this week. Students will be able to label the planets in order from the sun, compare and contrast rocky and gaseous planets and know the difference between revolution and.rotation. A quiz on the solar system is scheduled for Thursday, May 6. Be sure to review the notes in student resources, as well as utilize the activities on the portaportal site to help prepare for the quiz.
Social Studies: Students should be completing the Southwest Region study guide to prepare for the test on this unit on May 5th. Completion of the study guide will count toward the social studies homework grade. The study guide is due on May 4th and is an excellent resource to prepare for the test. We will move into our final region of study at the end of the week – the Western Region.
