April 16, 2021

We hope you all had a relaxing, fun-filled Spring Break! I enjoyed hearing about all of the adventures that students had on Monday!

It’s difficult to believe, but we are in the final stretch, the last nine weeks of fifth grade! While summer is beckoning, we still have lots of important material to cover before we are ready to send our students off to summer and middle school. Please continue to impress upon your child the importance of completing classwork assignments and homework and staying focused and attentive during instruction.

Next week we will be celebrating Library Month! Click on this link (Celebrate Library Month Activities) to join in the fun!

Next Wednesday, the library will be hosting two virtual sessions on embryology – a.k.a.- Mrs. Harris is hatching chick eggs again this year! During this optional virtual session, Mrs. Carter Humphreys from the Virginia Cooperative Extension/Henrico 4-H liaison will lead these fun and informative sessions. Mrs. Humphreys is a former educator and a great public speaker.

K-2 students can join Mrs. Harris’ Teams link on Wednesday April 21 at 1pm

4/19 – Science Force and Motion Quiz

4/20 – Social Studies Southwest Region map location and states and capitals quiz

4/21 – Reading Main Idea Quiz

4/23 – Greek and Latin #10 Quizzes

4/27 – Science Electricity Quiz

4/29 – Math Area, Perimeter, and Volume Test

Math:  We will be learning about area, perimeter, and volume of squares, rectangles, and triangles this week. Be sure to refer to the student resource folder and the portaportal sites to review these concepts. A test on this material will be on Thursday, April 29th.

Reading:  We have been working on review of recognizing the main idea and supporting details within text. There will be a quiz on these skills on Wednesday, April 21. We will then move into recognizing point of view in various text formats. Our Greek and Latin vocabulary list #10 will have the root “bio” (life) and the suffixes “ology” and “ologist” (study of or person who studies), and “phobia” “phobe” (fear, person who fears). To help prepare for the spelling and vocabulary quizzes on Friday take the practice tests on Vocabulary A-Z.

Writing:  Since April is Poetry Month students will have the opportunity to utilize what they have learned about figurative language in creating a variety of different forms of poetry in the coming weeks.

Science: We will wrap up our unit on force and motion in science this week. A quiz on these topics is scheduled for Monday, April 19. Be sure to utilize the notes and study guides in the student resources folder, as well as the fun review sites on portaportal to prepare for the quiz. We will then begin learning all about electric static, circuits, and currents.

Social Studies: The Southwest Region will continue to be our focus in social studies.  We will be learning all about the climate, natural resources, significant landmarks and economic opportunities of the region. A quiz on the map location of the four Southwest states and the capital of each state will be on Tuesday, April 20. The quiz will also incorporate states and capitals from previous regions studied (Southeast, Northeast, and Midwest) so students should review the states and capitals of those regions as well. The Tour the States song on the portaportal site is a great way to do this!
