We had a fantastic week in fifth grade! Students were busy as they demonstrated what they had learned as we wrapped up many units at the close of the third quarter. We really enjoyed our special visit from Camille Schrier, Miss America 2020 on Friday! She demonstrated a fun matter experiment the kids can try at home and also explained how she developed and cultivated a love for science. It was the perfect way to end the week and the day before Spring Break.
I wish you all a safe, happy, and relaxing Spring Break! I look forward to seeing everyone on April 12, to hear about all of the fun adventures had during the break, and to begin the fourth and final quarter of fifth grade!

Math: We will continue to learn about transformation and congruency with geometric figures and review geometric shape vocabulary and move into area and perimeter of shapes at the end of the week. There will be a test on transformation on Thursday, April 15.
Reading: This week we will begin to review previously taught skills of recognizing the main idea and supporting details within text. Students will have the opportunity to practice their skills as together we read through a variety of text. We will focus on locating the main idea and support this with evidence by locating the details within the text. Our Greek and Latin vocabulary list #9 will have the root “phon” (sound) and the suffixes “er, or, ian, ist.” To help prepare for the spelling and vocabulary quizzes on Friday take the practice tests on Vocabulary A-Z.
Writing: Since April is Poetry Month students will have the opportunity to utilize what they have learned about figurative language in creating a variety of different forms of poetry in the coming weeks.
Science: We are moving into force and motion in science this week. Students will learn about kinetic and potential energy and understand how friction, force, speed, and position affect energy. A quiz on force and motion is scheduled for Monday, April 19th. Be sure to utilize the notes and study guides in the student resources folder as well as the review sites on portaportal to prepare for the quiz.
Social Studies: It’s all about the Southwest Region in social studies this week. This week we will learn the location of the 4 states that make up this region and the capital of each state. We will then move into the climate, natural resources, significant landmarks and economic opportunities of this region. A quiz on the map location and the states and capitals will be on Tuesday, April 20th.
