We had a great first official week in our new learning environments! The students did a wonderful job and were very patient, kind and helpful as we worked through some of the technology kinks.
A friendly reminder that our instructional day for all students is 8:00 am to 1:00 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. ALL students are virtual each Wednesday from 8:00 am to 10:00 a.m., with additional activities to be completed independently after they sign off at 10:00 a.m. Any student who wishes to practice concepts and skills, as well as to answer questions is welcome to attend Office Hours with Mrs. Lyons’ from 10:00 – 10:30 on Wednesdays. Beginning March 8th, the in-person schedule will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:00 – 1:00. Don’t forget that Friday, March 12 is a half day for students. Dismissal will be at 10:30.

Math: We will be learning all about circles in math this week! Students will learn how to measure and recognize the circumference, diameter, radius, and chord of a circle. Please refer to the notes in the student resources folder and on the portaportal site to review and practice these skills.
We will have an early celebration of Pi day on Friday with some fun activities planned! A quiz on this unit will take place on Monday, March 15.
Reading: Cause and effect relationships will continue to be our focus in reading this week. We will wrap up this unit with a classwork assessment on Thursday. Our Greek and Latin Vocabulary list #5 includes the roots “ped” and “pod” (feet) and the prefixes “counter” and “contra” (opposite/against).
Writing: Students will continue to work on their persuasive writing skills on the importance of bees to prepare for our county writing assessment the week of March 15.
Science: It’s all about sound in Science! Students will investigate how sound is created, transmitted and used. Key vocabulary that will be introduced include wavelength, compression waves, waves, frequency, and vibrations. Take some time each day to recognize the sounds around you and see if you can use these scientific terms to identify them. Be sure to utilize the notes in the student resources folder, as well as the portaportal site to review these new concepts.
Social Studies: We are enjoying learning all about the 12 states in the Midwest Region. This week we will look at the important natural resources that this region provides. We will also work on completion of the Midwest My Maps project as part of the asynchronous learning on Wednesday. The quiz on the states and capitals and map location of the 12 states on Monday, March 8. Use the notes in the student resources folder to help prepare for this.
