It was wonderful to see you at Back to School Night Thursday evening! I hope you are more confident about navigating Schoology and better understand our homework expectations.  If you were unable to attend, I included the slideshow I went over within this week’s email update. Please be sure to click on the Padlet and/or the Flipgrid to leave your child a note of encouragement so we can share these in class next week.

From Mrs. Lucas: Students will need a paper ball and 2 tennis shoes on their feet this week. 1 shoe they will be wearing and the other shoe they will be catching.

10/21 Math quiz (rounding decimals)

10/23 Vocabulary & Spelling Quizzes on Word List #6

10/27 Science Weather Assessment

10/29 Character Collage Book Reports Due

11/6 PE assignments due for Mrs. Lucas

Math: We will look at adding and subtracting decimals this week. Students need to remember to line up the decimal points, not the digits in the numbers. This feels a little “backwards” to some students, but once they get it, adding and subtracting decimals is just like adding and subtracting whole numbers.

Writing: Next week we are going to talk about the “bing bang, bongo” technique for organizing ideas for our writing. Our goal is to write a 5 paragraph piece. This is great for all students, but also good practice for students applying to IB as they will have an essay to write on December 1st as part of the application process.

Reading: We will wrap up our discussion of plot by working through some questions together as a class. Then we will move on to text features mid-week. Text features give us so much information in a nonfiction work!

Our word list this week is all about creepy, ghost story words! Students can create their own flashcards or use this Quizlet link to help them study: Quizlet for List 6

Your child should have selected a book and be almost done reading it for the upcoming book report! Remember, students must read a new-to-them, grade-level book and complete their Character Collage by October 29: 2020 Character Collage Book Report. Please do not go buy materials for this project, students can use art supplies and a piece of computer paper to complete this.

Science: We are continuing our review of the 4th grade weather unit. Students should know the four types of clouds and the weather they predict, the most common weather tools, frontal boundaries and pressure, and characteristics of severe storms. There are notes and videos in the Student Resources–Science folder. We will have an assessment Tuesday, October 27th.

Studies: We have finished our study of Henrico County! Your child now knows all about the history of our county and how the economy and government evolved into the systems we have today. Monday we will start our map skills unit by going over geography vocabulary. Later in the week we will look at the different types of maps and how we can read information on a map.
