September 25, 2020

We enjoyed the first week of fall! The weather this week certainly put us into the fall state of mind too. Students are really getting the hang of our systems and routines. I am so proud of them!

We really enjoyed learning more about each other during our Morning Meeting on Friday. It was wonderful hearing about all the different interests that the students have!

Thank you so much for signing your child up for the individual reading assessments. The students are doing great and it’s so nice to have this one-on-one time with them to chat.

Don’t forget that Monday, September 28, is a school holiday!

Homework:

Just a friendly reminder to please check to ensure that your child is completing his/her daily homework assignments. This daily practice is so important and helps me to check for student understanding of the material. Each day students will have homework assignments in math, reading, and English to complete. Occasionally, they will have social studies or science. For students who were unable to complete the Henrico STEAM map project in class don’t forget that is due on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

During our Glen Allen ES virtual instruction, cameras and at times microphones are on. We wanted to make sure students are in a location that are not capturing other things in your household for privacy reasons. If an adult is helping facilitate, please make sure the adult is dressed appropriately and we ask that you mute the microphone to prevent the entire class from seeing and hearing. We hope this will assist all Cubs in focusing on their teacher and instruction.

9/28  Student and staff holiday – NO SCHOOL today

9/30 Math Quiz on Order of Operations

10/1  Science open notes quiz

10/2  Vocabulary & Spelling Quizzes on Word List #3

Math: Students will have a quiz on Wednesday that covers order of operations and reviews some prime and composite. We will spend the rest of our shortened week reviewing these concepts and I will be working with small groups to ensure all students are confident in these skills before we move on to another unit next week.

Math 5/6: I loved being able to meet with my 5/6 group last week! We have covered a few sixth grade topics so far:  integers, absolute value, and next week we are covering exponents! We will be reviewing these topics in our small group, and students have a folder with websites and practice files in the Student Resource folder to use during independent station time.

Writing: We are continuing to use our digital seed writing journal to come up with great ideas to expand our thoughts.

Reading: We will continue discussing character traits and applying them to characters in books we are reading. Our weekly vocabulary quizzes will be on Friday. These weeks’ words are all about Earth awareness!

This week I will also go over the first quarter book report assignment. Students are expected to complete this outside of class time over the next few weeks. We will present/share our posters on October 29. Here are the detailed instructions: 2020 Character Collage Book Report

Science: We are diggin’ into the three types of rocks in more detail this week! Students will have an open-notes quiz on Thursday. Please remind your child to review the materials in the Student Resources folder: the Earth Unit Study Guide and their Rocks Digital Notebooks are wonderful tools for studying!

Social Studies: This week will share our Henrico STEAM map projects and then we are moving on to learn about Henrico’s history and economy! Students will have a fun postcard project to create in class and then we will examine how Henrico’s economy has shifted as our county grew and expanded into what it is today. Students are learning so much about the area in which they live!

Have a wonderful 3-day weekend!
