Thank you so much for all of your support of the American Heart Challenge, our 5th Grade Chorus, and the GAES PTA! Tuesday was quite a day! Whew!

The “Lyons’ Den” goofing around after our first dress rehearsal performance of “It’s Gotta Be Jazz.”

Ask your child about the African-Americans they read about these past few weeks as we honored Black History Month. We looked at brave abolitionists, creative inventors, physicians, athletes who broke barriers, as well as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Booker T. Washington. I was happy students had the opportunity to learn about people who were new to them while also gaining deeper insight into the impact of some well known historical figures.

Students will be taking the HCPS satisfaction survey during the week of March 23-27. If you do NOT want your child to participate in this anonymous survey, please return the slip we sent home on Monday.

Classroom News:

Math: Next week we will finish our lessons on triangles. All students will need to know how to classify triangles by their sides and by their angles, as well as how to measure angles using protractors. The quiz on this unit is scheduled for March 9th. Students will also be given an angle name project to complete in school. This will provide a chance to combine art with math!

Science: Monday we will review all matter concepts. The unit test will be on Wednesday, March 4. Please make sure your child studies their notes and the Matter Study Guide while home on Tuesday in addition to using the portaportal for catchy review songs and videos.  We will then launch our force and motion unit on Thursday. Friday we have a fun density demonstration planned!

Reading: We are wrapping up cause & effect relationships in text with some interactive review activities. Students will have an assessment in class on Thursday. To prepare they can review their notes and the charts we have filled in in class.

Your child should be completing the reading of their book for the Book Buffet report that is due on March 13 and beginning to design and construct their project. Refer to this link for the electronic version of the directions and rubric: Book Buffet Requirements. Please note that all students need to bring the rubric to class with their project!

Vocabulary: This week we will be reviewing our Greek and Latin Roots lists 1-5. Students will have homework each day that will review each of the previous Greek and Latin roots and prefixes we have covered in units 1-5. Students should use previous vocabulary packets to assist with preparing for the review quiz that will cover all 5 lists. They can also go on Spelling City to assist with practice of both the spelling and meaning of each word. https://www.spellingcity.com/ – look for the Greek and Latin Roots lists under “Cathy Lyons.”

Social Studies: We are continuing with the Midwest Region, focusing on natural resources, significant features, and major landmarks throughout the region. Students will have two quizzes on Wednesday, one where they need to identify the state on a map and one where they need to match the states and capitals. Encourage your child to use the flashcards we made in class and to read over their notes.

Writing: Ask your child about our highlighting key! Using three different colors, we looked at starting words, action words, and adjectives. This was a great way for students to notice habits they have in their writing, like starting sentences with”I” and using “exciting” a lot. This gave students a great starting point for their revisions. With the help of peer reviewers, students are tackling their final draft!
