Happy Friday Glen Allen families! I was amazed by the amount of canned goods, hats, mittens, and gloves that were donated last week to such a worthy cause. Thank you so much for your generosity.

Look at what talented kiddos we have in the “Lyons’ Den!”

Congratulations to Braxton! He was our class spelling bee champ and will represent our class at the school wide spelling bee next month. Good luck Braxton!

Kenai and Anna Berit took part in the reflections contest, “Look Within,” and were at the reception this past weekend sharing their talents. Way to go girls!Tree Lighting Ceremony

Classroom News

Math

Next week in math we will be combining all of our fraction lessons to learn how to add and subtract like and unlike fractions.  This may take multiple steps, and students will be shown different methods to use. Once they decide on a method that works best for their thought process, they can continue using that process.  We will have a math quiz on Thursday, December 5, that will include all of our prior content, plus the new fraction material.

Science

In science we will continue learning about biology with the Cells unit.  It is truly fascinating to see cells under the microscope and to comprehend how there are millions of these specialized units within our bodies.  Students will need to know the parts of an animal cell and a plant cell as well as the function of each cell part for this unit. Please check out the Cell rap on the portaportal!

Reading

We will begin working on context clues and reviewing prior comprehension skills while completing some fun Thanksgiving stations next week. After Thanksgiving, we will begin our unit on Text Structures/Organizational Patterns. Students will not have vocabulary for our short week before Thanksgiving. We will pick up on list number 12 after the break. Be sure that your child is reviewing these words daily for understanding of the meaning, as well as the spelling of each word.

We distributed and went over the Cereal Box book report for the second nine weeks on Tuesday. Please be sure that you keep the directions and the rubric in a safe place and reference it for accurate completion of the book report requirements. The rubric must be returned when the book report is turned in on January 14. Students are excited about creating their own cereal based off the book they are reading!

Cubs Read: Students will receive a new reading log for December on Monday, December 2. Please return the November logs on this day.

Social Studies

The students loved creating the Region RAFT projects and sharing their ideas with the class. This was a great way to culminate our understanding of this unit. We will begin our unit on the Southeast Region after Thanksgiving Break. They will have notes and maps in their social studies notebook that they should refer to when preparing for quizzes and the unit test on each of the 5 U.S.regions. Students will need to know the map location of the 12 Southeast states and their respective capitals for a quiz on Tuesday, December 10.

Writing

We enjoyed sharing the Tom the Turkey writing assignments this week! What creativity we have in 5th grade! We have started to draft real compositions that include introductions, body, and conclusions on given topics.  This is exciting as it shows our progress from the pre-writing stages and how we can creatively capture the readers’ attention with an interesting introduction.

Have a great weekend!
