September 27, 2019

It was another terrific week in the Lyons’ Den! It’s hard to believe but we are almost at the half-way point of the first nine weeks. Time flies when you’re having fun learning! Bring on October!

Don’t forget that Monday, September 30th is a half day for students. Fifth grade will spend much of the morning completing Technology Safety rotations. Classes will rotate to each of the 5th grade classrooms where a 5th grade teacher will present lessons on various technology safety components. Be sure to ask what your child learned.

A message from Mrs. Lucas:

Below is a link from the new LIVE RED FOUNDATION- 2019 Regency Mile School Participation letter, which use to be the NOVA Short Pump Mile.  The race is October 27th, 2019 at Regency Square Mall this year.  Last year our school placed 5th in the race and won $200.  That money was used to buy new recess equipment.  We need as many cubs to participate as possible this year so we can get closer to the 1st place prize which is $600 dollars.  All the money won is used for students.  When registering make sure you include Glen Allen Elementary school when signing up online.  You can register at www.livered.org/regency-mile or see the attached letter for more information.  Please encourage your child to participate, this is Richmond’s largest timed road race JUST for kids and is  a great way to come together for a morning of fun and exercise.  I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lucas

Classroom News:

Reading: The students are really enjoying reading about the adventures in the classroom in the novel, Because of Mr. Terupt. During our daily read aloud students have been taking notes and discussing character traits and character development. Next week  we will continue with the novel and focus on inference skills, as well as plot development.

Character Trait Book Report: Please be sure that your child has selected and begun to read a  fictional book (4.5 reading level or above) for the book report that is due on October 31. The instructions and rubric for this report went home on Monday, Sept. 23. Be sure that your child is following the guidelines in preparation for this report. Students should set a goal for finishing their book that will allow for two weeks to work on the summary, visual (character collage poster), and presentation of the book report.

“Cubs Read” (reading incentive program):  Is your child interested in the “Cubs Read” program that offers incentives to students who go above and beyond the daily 2o minute reading homework requirement? If so, they should begin logging their minutes on the reading log/calendar that will be coming home on Tuesday, October 1.

Remember we have weekly vocabulary lists. This week we will be list #4 “Fame and Fortune Words.” Students have daily classwork and homework assignments to practice the vocabulary. Quizzes on the spelling and vocabulary of the 10 words take place each Friday.

Math: We are wrapping up Order of Operations and will have a quiz on Wednesday. We will then discuss properties and revisit multi-step word problems, focusing on spotting key words and solving multiplication and division problems with superb accuracy. Make sure your child is completing their homework each night to get more comfortable with these skills. Please continue to practice fact fluency. Moby Max is a great way to acquire these skills!

Math 5/6: This week our students will work on a thought provoking puzzle involving exponents and perfect squares. This activity will take a few days, utilize those critical thinking skills, and require a lot of concentration!

Science: We are wrapping up the rock cycle! The unit test is on Tuesday, covering layers of the Earth, plate tectonics, weathering and erosion, and the rock cycle. Since this is a unit test, the grade will be weighted twice. Please use the portaportal, study guides, and interactive notebooks to prepare for this test.  We will also be creating our own fossils this week!!! So exciting!

Social Studies: Students really enjoyed working together in small groups and presenting their Civil War Battles slideshows to the class. Coming up, students will examine the preservation of Henrico County historical sites. Students will then write their own tour guide script for these sites to turn into a multimedia presentation.

Writing: We are moving from prewriting to writing topic sentences and drafting paragraphs. We are focusing on the prompt PROMPT for the next couple weeks. We will be reviewing revising and editing techniques as students move more into drafting this piece of writing.

Enjoy this beautiful weekend!
