We had a wonderful first week in the “Lyons’ Den!” We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know one another and bonding through many common interests. We accomplished this through a variety of fun games, discussions, and some great ice breaker activities. We have quickly formed a unique bond as a special Glen Allen cub family.

We had a lot of fun reading inspirational stories about Michael Jordan’s childhood and learned about important reading vocabulary terms.

Academics

5th Grade Portaportal: https://guest.portaportal.com/gaes5thgrade

We are so thrilled to offer this great collection of sites for extra practice! Please bookmark the portaportal and use this in conjunction with the interactive notebook, worksheets, and study guides to help your child feel prepared. Thanks for your support!

It is also important that the students review their interactive notebooks nightly. Please encourage your child to bring their notebooks home – use them to help with homework and review the notes from that day.

Math: Next week we will work on prime, composite, odd, even, single-step and multi step practical problems in math.  Many students are struggling with the long division that is part of many word problems. Please be persistent in your practice – they will feel so great once the cobwebs are gone!  We typically collect at least one grade per week in math, so dedication to homework is a must! We’ll take a quiz on prime/composite, odd/even, and basic computation next week.

Science: We are starting the year with our rock unit.  We will be concentrating on the layers of the earth, weathering, erosion, and plate tectonics. Please encourage your students to be reviewing nightly by using the study guide that was distributed, the portaportal (Rocks section), and their notebooks.

Did you hear about our Spaghetti Towers today?!!  We had a blast collaborating and working together as a team in an attempt  to create the tallest tower!

Reading/Language Arts:  Next week students will begin to work on reading and understanding multisyllabic words in our English vocabulary. Each Friday students will have a test on the meaning and the spelling, as well as the application of the ten vocabulary words that will be introduced on Mondays. Students will practice the words during stations in class and will have a daily homework assignment to practice learning the vocabulary.

In reading we are getting ready to begin Fountas and Pinnell assessments. The data from this asseessment will provide me with information regarding each students reading proficiency. Students will also enjoy completing a variety of activities on the inspirational  fiction novel, “Sees Behind Trees.”

Social Studies: We will continue with our study of Henrico County in Social Studies. This week we will focus on the geography and history of Henrico. We will have an open notes quiz on the geography of Henrico on Wednesday, Sept. 11th. Students should use the Henrico packet to review for this quiz.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our Back to School Night on Thursday,September 19th. I will be sharing information about the fifth grade curriculum in detail on this night.

Class Dojo: Have you accepted your Class Dojo invite yet???  ClassDojo is an app you can download on your phone to see the number of points your child earned for the day.  Points are earned by positive behavior and modeling leadership skills. It is a great system for students to make and reach goals.  Additional information will be provided at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 19th.

The “Lyons Den” is still in need of filling some very important vacancies. I am looking for room parent(s) and additional copy parent(s). I hope you will consider filling one of these very important jobs. The 5th grade room parents always do such a great job working together to make this an extra-special year for the students. Please let me know if you have questions about either of these positions, or if you would like to volunteer for one of these vacancies. Thanks so much!
