Valentine’s Day is next week. Please be cognizant of sending a Valentine for every student in the class if you choose to send them in. The students will write down the names of their classmates on a sheet of paper that will be in their purple folders. Here is a link to our class list if you should need it. class-list-2018 (1) Due to food allergies please remember that items that contain nuts cannot be sent in to class. Book Buffet Book Report
The students are so excited about our book report for the 3rd nine weeks – the return of the great Glen Allen Book Buffet! The Book Buffet book report was assigned on February 6 and is due on Wednesday, March 21. Please be sure to go over the book report directions and guidelines with your child to ensure that they are managing their time wisely in reading and completing the book report project. Today we outlined parameters for good time management and documented it in our book report direction packet in class. This included the following:
- Students should have their book approved by the teacher on or before February 13.
- Students should complete the reading of the book on or before March 6.
- Students should begin working on the project on or before March 6 to have it completed and ready to turn in on March 21. *Change of date due to 5th grade performance on March 19.
Please be sure to keep the book report directions and rubric in a safe place. All rubrics must be turned in with the book report on March 21.

We will begin unit 3 of the Greek and Latin Roots (cred, dis, de) this week and test on Friday. Students can go onto Spelling City if they would like to practice the word lists at home!
Spelling City: Please have your child log onto Spelling City each week to practice the reading vocabulary. This is such a fun way to increase their knowledge and application of the weekly vocabulary words and to review past lists as well. Look for the link to Spelling City on the right hand side of the blog. This week we will be in the second semester group of words; list #3.
What’s Happening in Reading?
We are really enjoying our “One Book – One School” initiative through the reading of “The World According to Humphrey!” As we are reading this fun-filled book we continue to work on inferencing and drawing conclusions.
Cubs Read (Glen Allen reading incentive program): Is your child logging his/her GAR minutes on their calendar? Be sure that they have picked up the February log to keep track of the minutes they are reading each day. This program is a fun way to reward the reading that your child does each day at home.
Social Studies:
In social studies we are learning all about the Northeast Region. This week we will focus on the natural resources, economic activities, significant features and landforms and water of the Northeast. We will have a matching map quiz of the Northeast states on Wednesday, February 13. Continue to visit my Portaportal site for some fun games and songs to help reinforce the 50 states and capitals. This is located on the bottom of my email and the right hand side of the blog.
The PTA has created a new event this year for our community – A Cub Valentine Breakfast.
From February 11-14, Cub families can join us in the cafe for donuts and photos from 7:20-7:40 am. For just $3 per person, you’ll get a glazed Krispy Kreme donut and a drink. We will also have a photo booth set up, so you can take a fun valentine themed photo with your family.
