December 1st Tree Lighting Information:
I look forward to seeing everyone at the Tree Lighting this Saturday, December 1st. The ceremony will take place rain or shine! The fifth grade students have been working very hard in chorus each week and they are very excited to be performing at the 19th annual Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center’s Tree Lighting. The festivities take place from 4:30-7:00, however students will be finished with their performance around 5:00. Mr. Mills would love for the students to be there no later than 4:15 dressed in “wintery” red and green attire (or as much red and green as can be rustled up). Diva was selected as the winner at Glen Allen Elementary last month and she did a great job representing our school at the awards ceremony on Monday night. We are all so proud of her hard work!
What’s Happening in Reading?
In reading we are recognizing the importance of identifying various structural patterns (cause and effect, problem and solution, compare and contrast, description, and chronological) within nonfiction and narrative nonfiction texts and how this helps us develop into better readers. We will be diving into a variety of text to recognize the text structure/structural patterns.
Second 9 Weeks Lotus Book Report Due 1/16/19:
Your child has received the second 9 week book report instructions and rubric. Please be sure to keep this in a safe place. Rubrics must be returned to school when the reports/projects are due.
Above is an example of the Lotus Book Report.
Here are digital versions of the book report directions and rubric should you need it:
Spelling City: Please have your child log onto Spelling City 2-3 times each week to practice the reading vocabulary. This is such a fun way to increase their knowledge and application of the weekly vocabulary words and to review past lists as well. Look for the link to Spelling City on the right hand side of the blog, search for me under teachers, we are in the first semester group of words (Multisyllabic Vocabulary). Next week we will be working on list #11, “Fabulous Food Words.”
Social Studies:
The students are loving our social studies unit on geography. We are learning all about the 5 regions of the United States and the Southeast Region’s 12 states capitals, as well as the various characteristics of the Southeast region. We will have a quiz on the Southeast states and capitals and the chapter 6 vocabulary words on Friday, December 7th. Be sure to go on my Portaportal site for some fun games and songs to help reinforce the 50 states and capitals. The “Tour the States” song is a real hit! The Portaportal can be found at the bottom of my email and on the right hand side of the blog.
Curriculum- Make sure to click on my curriculum tab (at the top of this post) to find out the content we are learning in the second nine weeks of school.
