I was so proud of all of the wonderful book reports that the students shared this week! They did a great job. If you’re up at school take a peek at the book report “gallery” in the 5th grade hallway and my classroom.

SCA

I am so proud of these “Lyons’ Den” students for running for SCA (School Council Association). They made excellent campaign posters and did a fabulous  job giving speeches to the third – fifth grade students this past Tuesday. Congratulations to Jacob for being elected as the SCA treasurer. Congratulations also to Monica and Emmit. They will be the “Lyons’ Den’s” classroom representatives.

Parent/Teacher Conferences 11/5 & 11/6

Parent teacher conferences are scheduled for November 5th in the evening, and November 6th in the morning.  Mrs. Johnson and I will hold conferences together in room 17 in order to discuss all curriculum areas. The time slots are short, so be sure to arrive on time. We will work hard to stay on schedule!

RVA Field Trip News

We are so excited for the 5th grade RVA field trip on November 7th (Lyons, Johnson, & Dawe). For this field trip the students will need to dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes as we will be outside on a walking tour for the duration of the trip. The field trip will include a guided tour of Hollywood Cemetery. The students will be learning about the cemetery’s unique history, its landscape design, architecture, symbols as well as noted residents that include two former U.S. Presidents.  On the day of the trip we will leave Glen Allen at 9:30 and return at 12:45. We will have lunch on school grounds (weather permitting) or in the classroom when we return. Due to County policy, no electronic devices are permitted on the field trip.

Tom the Turkey!

Students will begin a fun writing assignment on Monday! A template of Tom the Turkey will be distributed and students will come up with a creative disguise so that no one eats him on Thanksgiving! The students will also write a short story about their turkey. Be as creative as you would like! Here is a picture of two examples from previous years. The disguise and the story will be due on Wednesday, November 14th. I can’t wait to see the creativity of the students!

A note from Mrs. Harris, our school librarian, regarding the upcoming GAES Book Fair!

Dear Parents and Families:

Did you know? Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes your child to about 1.8 million words per year. Reading helps students develop a stronger vocabulary, and in addition, students who read for pleasure average higher grades in English, mathematics, science, and history!

Encourage your child to read books for fun by attending our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level.

Mark your calendar!
