Wow, already two weeks down! We really got into the “nitty-gritty” of the fifth grade curriculum this week in reading, English, and social studies. I have been and will continue to meet with each student individually to complete Fountas and Pinnel  assessments. These informal assessments not only allow me to develop a better understanding of each student’s reading comprehension and fluency, but they also allow me the opportunity to have some one-on-one time to get to know each student better.

Congratulations to Reese and Mason! The winners of the Lyons’ Den Blog Trivia last week! See me for your prize on Monday. Who will the winners be  this week?

Room Parent and Copy Parent

Thank you to Carolyn Morgan (Emmit Morgan’s mother) for volunteering to be our room parent this year! If you are willing and able Ms. Howard and I are still looking for a copy parent to come in once a week for 30 minutes to assist with copying of the reading and social studies material. Thanks so much!

Back to School Night is this Thursday

Mrs. Johnson and I look forward to meeting you next Thursday, Sept. 20th at 6:30 for Back to School Night! I feel so fortunate to work at a school with such a great support system.

Novel Study

The students have been working on a historical fiction story, “Sees Behind Trees.”  Please click the link below if you would like your child review the story at home.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUwsRXP5LhI

Vocabulary Reminder

We will be having vocabulary homework on a daily basis and each Friday there will be a spelling portion and a vocabulary portion to the test. Please be sure that your child is completing the entire page in their vocabulary packet each day for their homework completion quiz grade. The weekly vocabulary packets should stay in the students’ binders throughout the year as a means of reference and for periodic review tests.  Please note that we are waiting on our Spelling City.com accounts and passwords. However, until that time, with your guidance students can go onto Spelling City, search under teachers for Cathy Lyons to locate their lists. The first semester we are working on Multisyllabic Vocabulary.  Spelling City is a fun way to practice both the meaning and spelling of the vocabulary words that students should be utilizing weekly.

Henrico Explorers Passport Program

This is an optional program that you and your family can participate in. The Henrico Explorers passport permission slips will go home next week. If your family is interested in taking part in this optional activity with your child, please sign and return the form to school by September 25.

Have an safe and astonishing weekend!
