We had a fantastic time on our field trip to the Virginia Historical Society on Friday! Many students proclaimed that they couldn’t wait to come back to the museum with their families. I was so proud of the students as they demonstrated their vast knowledge of our local history and showed off their best Glen Allen manners!
The cafeteria construction is starting on Monday! Please note we are following an altered lunch schedule to accommodate the loss of the back portion of the cafeteria. Due to adjustments in schedules and limited seating, we will not be able to have visitors during lunch. We encourage families to take the opportunity on Field day for a picnic lunch with our class. Thank you for understanding! 5L lunch time will now begin at 12:55 and 5H lunch time will begin at 1:00.

GAR (Glen Allen Reads – incentive program): Is your child logging his/her GAR minutes on their calendar? Be sure that they pick up the March log to keep in their GAR folder. The calendars are always ready for pick up on the reading area bookshelf. The GAR program is a fun way to reward the reading that your child does each day at home.
This week will begin unit 6 of our study of Greek and Latin roots (port = carry, com, con, co = with). Spelling City is an excellent resource to assist with the meaning and spelling of these words!
Spelling City: We are so fortunate at GAES to have the Spelling City app for our students to practice vocabulary and spelling. Please have your child log onto Spelling City at least 2-3 times each week to practice the reading vocabulary. This is such a fun way to increase their knowledge and application of the weekly vocabulary words and to review past lists as well. Look for the link to Spelling City on the right hand side of the blog.
Social Studies:
We are really enjoying learning all about the Midwest Region! The test on the Midwest will be on Tuesday, March 20. Students were required to complete the study guide that is in their social studies notebook. Completion and review of the study guide will assist your child in doing their best on the test. Be sure your child is also reviewing the study guide map, the state and capital flashcards, and going onto the Portaportal site for some fun games and songs to help reinforce the 50 states and capitals. You can find the Portaportal site at the bottom of my email, as well as the right hand side of the blog.
Writing
Students will continue to focus on perfecting editing skills. They are also working on adding elaboration and details. I am excited to see some of the students work on creating their favorite forms of poetry that we have studied.
