Field Trip!
On March 16th Mrs. Dawe’s, Ms. Howard’s & Mrs. Lyons’ classes will be going on a field trip to the Virginia Museum of History and Culture from 9:45-1:15. On this field trip, exhibits will include information on historical events such as: wars, Virginia history, memorials and other fun and exciting historical information. We ask that parents help chaperone this FREE field trip in an effort to assist in monitoring of the students to ensure they are having fun and learning about our history! If you’d like to be a chaperone, please email me as soon as possible, fill out the bottom of the permission slip indicating your ability to chaperone, and ensure you have completed the volunteer form and video in the school office. I can take 7 chaperones! We plan to walk around as a class while observing exhibits and then attend a classroom lesson. We will also have our packed lunches while at the museum. We appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to help guide the students for a successful field trip!

GAR (Glen Allen Reads – incentive program): Is your child logging his/her GAR minutes on their calendar? Be sure that they pick up the March log to keep in their GAR folder. The calendars are always ready for pick up on the reading area bookshelf. The GAR program is a fun way to reward the reading that your child does each day at home.
We will begin unit five (ped, pod, counter, contra) of our Greek and Latin Roots for our reading vocabulary and spelling. The students are amazed at the fact that over 60 percent of all English words have Greek or Latin roots. In the vocabulary of the sciences and technology, the figure rises to over 90 percent!
Spelling City: We are so fortunate at GAES to have the Spelling City app for our students to practice vocabulary and spelling. Please have your child log onto Spelling City at least 2-3 times each week to practice the reading vocabulary. This is such a fun way to increase their knowledge and application of the weekly vocabulary words and to review past lists as well. Look for the link to Spelling City on the right hand side of the blog.
Social Studies:
Students enjoyed completing an in-class partner project to demonstrate and elaborate upon their knowledge of the Northeast region. We are now off to the Midwest! There will be a quiz on Friday, 3/9, which will require that students know the location of each of the 12 Midwest states on the map. Students will also need to know the capitals for each state. Be sure your child is reviewing the study guide map, the state and capital flashcards, and going onto the Portaportal site for some fun games and songs to help reinforce the 50 states and capitals. This is located on the bottom of my email, as well as the right hand side of the blog.
Writing
Students continue to work on editing their writing and adding elaboration and details. If you have not sent in the yellow, pink, and blue highlighters or markers please do so as soon as possible. Students are also working on creating some of their very own poetry!
