Math: The students did a great job measuring the volume and creating various animals for our Volume Zoo project! Thank you for sending in boxes to assist with this. They will be finishing up their animal and then create a story about their animal and their habitat this week. Be sure to ask them all about it.
Reading/English: We will continue to read our class novel, Restart and practice the reading strategies we have learned this year. Students will present projects they created to the class on a topic of their choice in the past couple weeks.
We will also be completing some fun activities incorporating our memories of 5th grade!
Science: We’ll be completing some STEAM activities during the next two weeks demonstrating all that we have learned in science this year. Our Volume Zoo project will also cross over into our science unit as we dive into the habitats of the various animals created.
Social Studies: We will finish an in-class project to help reinforce what we have learned about the West Region. We will also begin to learn about the 4 states that make up the Southwest Region. Our 5th grade states and capitals competitions start this week! Go Lyons’ Den!!

Math: We will wrap up our unit on metric conversions and then review elapsed time. Our test on elapsed time is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23. We will also be working on evaluating and creating various schedules to reinforce our understanding of elapsed time.
We will begin a fun project this week to reinforce our measurement unit – Volume Zoo! Please send in various size boxes.
Reading/English: We will continue to read our class novel, Restart and practice the reading strategies we have learned this year. We will also be completing some fun activities incorporating our memories of 5th grade!
Students will begin composing a friendly letter to rising 5th graders giving words of advice on how to have a successful 5th grade year.
Social Studies: We will wrap up our study of the West Region of the United States this week. Students brought home a West Region Study Guide last Wednesday to help prepare for the test on this region scheduled for Wednesday, 5/24. Completion of the study guide is expected and is imperative to preparing for the test. The study guide is due the day of the test and counts toward the homework grade. We will begin a fun, in-class project to help reinforce all that we have learned about the West Region.
Science: This week we will judge our fabulous Wildflower STEAM creations making sure they met all of our design criteria.

We are so excited about our upcoming field trip to the Virginia Living Museum this Thursday, May 18! Please be sure that your child is on time to school, dresses appropriately for the weather and a full day of walking, brings a couple snacks for the drive to and from the museum, a water bottle, and a bagged lunch all labeled with their name. We expect to return to school at 4:00. Remember that no electronics are allowed on the field trip. Students are welcome to bring books, playing cards, puzzle books, etc.

During small group meetings we will be reviewing even and odd, prime, composite and rounding.
Reading/English: Our Reading SOL is on Thursday! We will be practicing our reading skills and comprehension strategies in preparation for the big day.
April is poetry month! Students will be composing their own poetry.
Vocabulary: There is no vocabulary this week.
Science: In Science, we will continue energy conservation and energy sources. This is the last 5th-grade science unit

Field Day!Get ready for some fun on Friday, April 14, 2023, 8:00 – 1:50 (grades k-2 – 8:00-10:40, Lunch 10:40-11:10, grades 3-5 11:10-1:50)
Students should wear their house colors, bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat.
Field day is for approved parent volunteers, staff and students this year. We need around 50 volunteers. In order to follow all safety processes and effectively monitor who is on our campus, we will only be having approved volunteers for the event during the school day. No visitors or lunch guests on this day. Students are able to bring their lunch or purchase from the cafeteria. You can sign up to volunteer by completing the process below and then once you are approved you can sign up at (https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0F4FAAAB2FA75-field). Catch-A-Star Program and Award: Falling under the auspices of Arts-in-Education, Catch-a-Star encourages students to visit cultural festivals, museums, live performances, and galleries. Each time they do, they can visit our Catch-a-Star Form and leave a response with their impressions of the visit. We tally up the comments and all participants are recognized at the end of the school year—with special prizes for the top “star-catchers”! Math: We will wrap up our unit on circles this week with a test on Tuesday, 4/11. We will then move into our geometry unit on transformations. Students will identify congruent figures and explain why they are congruent. We will also transform geometric figures by using mirrors, paper folding, and/or tracing to translate, rotate, and/or reflect.
Reading/English: We will continue learning about Figurative Language language. We will look for figurative language in a variety of songs and poems and discuss the author’s purpose for using different forms of figurative language. Since April is poetry month, students will begin composing their own poetry in the coming weeks!
Vocabulary: Our weekly Vocabulary List #8 focuses on “Nifty Not Words.”We will continue with our small group novels, as well as our whole group read aloud of Restart.
Science: In Science, we will continue with our unit on the Earth. We will review fossils and the movements of tectonic plates and then look at identifying types of rocks and their examples. We will also look into the characteristics of each rock and start looking at the rock cycle! A test on this unit is scheduled for Tuesday, April 18. Students will be provided with an opportunity to complete an optional project on the layers of the Earth that will count as a project grade. Prior to Spring Break, 7 students indicated that they would like to complete this optional project. They will receive detailed instructions this week.
Social Studies: We’re off to the West Region in social studies this week! We will focus on locating and describing the West Region and identifying the states and capitals that make up the West Region. A quiz on the 12 states and capitals of the West Region is scheduled for Thursday, 4/13.
