Strawbridge Studios recently gave students who purchased school pictures a free student ID. The IDs were a promotion from the picture vendor, and there is no requirement for students to carry them on campus. Because the cards increase security, all Varina students would benefit from their use.
It is true that purchasing student ID cards for the entire school would be expensive. Senior class sponsor and English teacher Emily Stains said the IDs for seniors alone would cost at least $2,000, but the investment in school safety is worth it.
Safety on our outdoor campus is a major concern for administrators, teachers and students since it easy for an intruder to step onto school grounds. IDs could improve campus safety because they could be used to screen for intruders and provide immediate information in a crisis situation.
Of course, the IDs would not be effective if students leave them at home. Administration, teachers and security would need to check for student identification on a regular basis to ensure that students carried them. A recent survey showed that close to 80 percent of students are in favor of student IDs.
Despite their expense, the administration should issue student IDs to every student on this campus. No one can put a price tag on our safety.
