The Varina varsity girls volleyball team fell to Manchester High School Thursday night on the Blue Devils’ home court. The game started with Blue Devil setter junior Kayla DeJesus serving. Unfortunately, she hit the net and the Lancers gained a point. In the first set, Blue Devil junior Tatiana Smith stopped Lancer Asia Burton from gaining a point; the game was then tied, 10-10. The first set ended with the Lady Devils falling behind 23-25.
In the second set, junior libero L’Yoni Elcock dove face first and saved the ball from going out of bounds. Blue Devil junior Makayla Carter had a few tricks up her jersey and hit the ball backwards. The Lancers failed to get the ball, and Varina gained a point. The second set ended and the Lady Devils were down again, 15-25.
In the third set, Lady Lancer Lauren Stackhouse spiked the ball so hard that it knocked L’Yoni over. The third set ended 20-25, and the Manchester Lancers won the game.
“What contributed to our loss was lack of communication,” said L’Yoni. “We’re a good team and we trust each other, but I don’t think we trust each other enough.”
The Lady Blue Devils will take on the Hanover on September 21 at 7:00 p.m. at home.
