Freshmen live football fantasy on varsity team

By Tahji Collins

For three JV players, playing varsity football is no longer a fantasy.

Freshmen slotback Stephen Richardson, linebacker and running back Chris Jones and slotback and kick returner RJ Coles replaced injured varsity players.

“These players are helping the team by providing more talent, so we can be successful this year,” varsity coach Stu Brown said.

Stephen moved up first after wide receiver Corey Finney’s knee injury at practice. On JV Stephen played running back and special teams returner, positions that were left open.

“Our team is a little shaky, but we’ll eventually adjust to the changes,” JV coach Keith Stainker said. He also said that they have to build the team up again.

Chris and RJ moved up at the same time because of player injuries in the Armstrong game.

“We chose Chris because he is a good and powerful player. That’s exactly what we needed,” Coach Stu Brown said.

Chris said that he is enjoying his time with the team.

“It’s a huge benefit,” Chris said. He added that he doesn’t get a lot of playing time, but he learns from the older players, and that can make him a better player.

“It’s a lot of running, hard work. It’s different. You have to do everything accurately, or you’ll get fussed at,” Chris said.

RJ said that he wants a permanent spot on varsity.

“I’m trying to make it on the team permanently, but it depends on how good I am,” RJ said. On varsity he is playing against bigger and better players.

Junior left guard Mylz Jones said that the new players changed the morale of the team.

“These players actually taught me something, that the stereotype of freshmen not being as good as sophomores, juniors or even seniors is not true,” Mylz said.

Linebacker and captain Chris Tedder said the freshmen are assets.

“I think they’re coming out ready to work and help the team on our journey,” Chris said.
