Varina boys varsity volleyball swept Armstrong High School on September 19. The game started off with sophomore setter Jonathan Irons serving. At the end of the first set, Varina took the win with 25 points to Armstrong’s 12. In the second set, however, Varina junior outside hitter Matthew Bendle stopped the game to confess that he touched the net, giving the point to Armstrong. Varina still won the set 25-21 with senior outside hitter Angel Smith making several points. Varina followed the pattern in the third set with junior libero Deondre Watts scoring the winning point (25-20). When it was all over, Matthew said, “This is our first win, and I feel way better about this game versus our other games.” Varina will next take on Atlee on September 28 at home.
