DC’s favorite brooding and narcissistic “caped crusader” is back in the action-packed, star-studded film “The Lego Batman Movie.”
“The Lego Batman Movie” takes place after “The Lego Movie” and “Batman vs. Superman” but is no relation to the other movies and the old TV show from the 60s. There are some comedic references to them, which add a nostalgic touch for watchers of the original TV show and previous movies.
Batman/Bruce Wayne (Will Arnett) is still trying to defeat The Joker (Zach Galifianakis) and refuses to refer to him as his arch nemesis, which makes The Joker very angry. The Joker decides to take his anger out on Batman by releasing all of cinema’s most famous and most sinister villains from the Phantom Zone, a jail for bad guys in the sky. King Kong, Lord Voldemort, the Wicked Witch of the West and the shark from “Jaws,” just to name a few, make an appearance.
Throughout the movie, Batman must overcome his fear of having a family and must learn how to work well with others. Batman accomplishes both by letting Robin, Commissioner Barbara Gordon and Alfred the butler (Ralph Fiennes) assist him in fighting The Joker and his evil villain army.
The movie is filled with jokes that appeal to many generations, which makes this a perfect family movie. For the older viewers, there are references to pop culture, a great soundtrack with classic songs and a few adult jokes. For the kids and teenagers, there is plenty of potty humor and references to current movies and TV shows.
Whether you are 7 or 77, “The Lego Batman Movie” brings out the kid in the viewer. The movie is relatable to all generations who will have the Batman theme song stuck in their heads for days.
