Column: Don’t leave HBCU out

By Laura Eley

Spike Lee. Samuel Jackson. Oprah Winfrey. Martin Luther King, Jr. All were educated at historically black colleges and universities.

HBCU institutions must have student populations with at least 50 percent African American, Hispanic or other minority races. But HBCUs aren’t just for minority students.

Why haven’t you heard of HBCU? I am currently in GroupMe with girls who live in states from Michigan to Florida. All of us are interested in attending an HBCU. Out of 28 girls, only five say their schools give out information on HBCUs.

HBCUs complain they do not receive as many applications as they want, but are they going out and getting the students? No. We go to school counselors to find out our options, but are we asking the questions that need to be asked? No. And students, are you using sites like Cappex, College Prowler and the oh-so-famous College Board to learn about every type of college out there?

I know for a fact that HBCUs like Spelman College, Morehouse College and Fisk University have information sessions all over the country.

HBCUs are educationally effective, especially for those interested in science, technology, engineering and math. Furthermore, 38 HBCUs offer stem fellowships that lead to work in those areas.

You could be the next Michael Strahan. He’s a proud product of Texas Southern University, member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, correspondent on NFL on FOX, host of “Live! with Kelly and Michael” and “Good Morning America.”

Don’t miss out on an opportunity to find out about HBCUs.
