In their classic rivalry game, the Highland Springs football team emerged the victor over the Varina Blue Devils at Varina High School on Friday November 7.
Senior wide receiver Corey Finney started things off for the Blue Devils by making the first touchdown.
The Springers answered back with a 32 yard rush and a reception by junior wide receiver Greg Dortch.
Despite Varina’s forceful attempt to stop the Springers, they couldn’t put an end to their streak in the second quarter.
Four touchdowns were scored by senior running back KC Hinton and senior wide receivers Marcus Taylor and Felton Davis.
At halftime Varina alumni and retired fullback for the Seattle Seahawks Michael Robinson was honored with a plaque.
The Blue Devils recharged their desire to win when senior quarterback Tim Minor and senior running back Alisshuwa Becoat scored two touchdowns. But just as Varina was about to make a comeback, the Springers shut them down with two more touchdowns.
Assistant coach Deonta Gail said that the most challenging part of the season was getting past losses and learning from mistakes.
“All of our losses we had a chance to win,” Mr. Gail said.
The Springers’ hard work paid off with a final score of 47-20.
