Opinion: Students put too much on social media

by Jamie Lund

Teenagers are constantly involved in social media. We join more and more websites to connect with friends and to share more and more personal information.  But we need to watch what we post.

A survey conducted by Bando shows that nearly 40 percent of Internet users between the ages of 18-56 have regretted posting personal information.  This is crazy.  Why do we post things we later regret?

Of course, we post things in the moment.  One of the biggest regrets is posting out of anger.  Anger can ruin you, and bashing someone or something in a post can easily come back to haunt you.  After we get over whatever made us angry, we realize too late that we shouldn’t have hit the post button.

Of course, anger isn’t the only issue with posting things we later regret.  Sometimes pictures are posted without a second thought until later when the realization that it’s inappropriate sinks in.

An article from the Huffington Post said, “If you don’t want your grandparents to see it, don’t post it online.”  This is definitely something we should live by.  If we wouldn’t show an inappropriate picture to our grandparents, why should we show it to the world?

So be wise about what you post.  Our digital footprint will always be there, so don’t be embarrassed about what you leave behind.
