Boys soccer hopes to build on coach’s first season

The first step to victory, as Coach Emmanuel Asiamah said about varsity boys soccer (0-12), is to grow as a team.

The winless team is working on developing the technical aspects of the game.

Many people had expected Coach Asiamah to lead the Blue Devils to victory since he had been a winning coach at Hanover High School for six years.

Coach Asiamah said his team has good athletes who are still developing skills.

Coach Asiamah said his transition to Varina is totally different from being a freshman coach at Hanover.

“You have to get to know the kids first. Then you access them to see which skills each individual kid has in playing on the field. After that, you start working with them one-on-one so they can improve on their technical skills of the game and then actually win a game,” Coach Asiamah said.

Sophomore right full back Zachary Spedden said the coach’s overall goal is to improve Varina’s soccer program.

“He’s a huge motivation to go out and do our best, and he’s brought a lot of new things to the table in terms of skills for us to use in a game,” Zach said.

Junior defense and midfield Savion Adamson said he is inspired to keep playing after losses.

“We are an aggressive team. It’s just when a goal is scored on us, we tend to drop our heads instead of moving on and focusing on the game ahead of us, and that’s what we need to improve on,” Savion said.
