Baseball adjusts to tougher schedule

by Macy Shupe

The varsity baseball team has a new schedule due to redistricting and a record that has suffered.

Last year the team ended with an 11-9 record.  This season it was 9-9.

“Our record isn’t as good as last year’s because we played much harder teams this year,” junior right fielder Matt Felts said.  “[But] it isn’t all that because we’ve been playing teams like Cosby and James River.”

He also said that Blue Devil hitters have faced good pitching by opponents.

“These pitchers we’re going against pitch like 80 to 90 miles per hour,” Matt said.

Junior right fielder David Wyand said that the Blue Devils will be more competitive next year.

“I think playing against these teams kind of shows us who is good under the pressure like on the mound and when they’re hitting,” David said.  “Next year it will probably be better since we’ll actually have some experience going up against these teams.”

Coach Mike Crostic said his team has faced formidable opponents.

“I think that the new schedule has showed the team a different level of baseball they aren’t used to seeing,” Coach Crostic said.

Senior Blue Devils said they are especially disappointed with their lower record because it is their last year playing high school baseball.

“I wish they could have waited to do the redistricting because this is my last year playing, and I wanted to at least go as far as we did in districts last year,” senior left fielder Nick Garrett said.

Senior first baseman Branden Dreher said the team just doesn’t have the luck they had previously.

“We’ve gone through some tough luck as a team this year.  We aren’t as lucky as we were last year,” Branden said.
