The varsity volleyball team (5-9) is hoping to improve its play.
“This season isn’t starting off as good as it usually does, but we do have a lot of players on the team who have never played volleyball before,” senior captain and outside hitter Dexter Dowling said.
Senior captain and all-around player Robert Evans said the team’s strongest skill is passing and weaknesses include communication and hustling in practice and in the game.
Senior front middle G’Qwon Springs-Mc’Keithen, a first-year player, said he hopes his teammates continue to use practice to improve their skills. G’Qwon said he believes the team needs to improve on passing the ball to the setter.
Junior defensive player Savion Adamson said he plays volleyball for fun. He said the transition from JV to varsity is intense because the players are more serious about winning. Savion said the team has potential if they can get their minds focused on volleyball and perfecting their skills.
G’Qwon said reflecting on games helps.
“After every game we figure out what we did wrong in that game, and then the next practice we work on that,” G’Qwon said.
Savion said there has been some improvement.
“There’s a lot more digging and sharper hitters,” Savion said.
G’Qwon said that one positive is that the team gets along with each other very well on and off the court.
“I like the diversity. I met a lot of new people that I didn’t know,” G’Qwon said. “We all get along so when it’s time to play we can come together as a team.”
