Review: Hostages

“Hostages” attracts the audience immediately with an opening scene that’s full of twisted action.

The show is set in Washington D.C. During a press conference with Dr. Ellen Sanders (Toni Collette) about the surgery of President Paul Kincaid (James Naughton), robbers at a local bank hold hostages until rogue FBI Special Agent Duncan Carlisle (Dylan McDermott) shoots and kills the leader of the operation, saving the day.

Ironically, Carlisle turns out to be the real leader who holds the family of Dr. Sanders hostage threatening to kill them if she doesn’t kill the President during surgery. Dr. Sanders is left to decide between the life of her family and the life of the President.

The show keeps the audience surprised with all the members of the Sanders family having their own secret. Ellen’s husband Brian (Tate Donovan) is a supposedly successful businessman who is having an affair with his secretary Samantha (Hilarie Burton). Ellen and Brian have no idea that their son Jake (Mateus Ward) is selling weed and that their daughter Morgan (Quinn Shephard) is pregnant. These surprises sometimes overload the show.

All the actors play their parts well, but Donovan overacts at times and Ward comes off as a crybaby.

McDermott adds the most suspense to the show, and this isn’t the first time he has played a character that kills a president. He’s the perfect actor for this role, and director Jefferey Nochmanoff uses his sly attitude well.

“Hostages” has a little too much drama on top of the already-stressful plot but still entertains viewers and makes them want to stay tuned for the next week’s episode.

The calm demeanor of characters like Ellen who attempts to kill the President keeps everyone on the edge of their seats.
