For students and staff, making Homecoming a special night is all about preparation.

Senior Bria Mitchell said it takes her over five hours on the day of the dance to get ready. Prior to dance night, she spends a lot of time choosing whom she will attend the dance with and where they will eat dinner. She said these decisions help make it a memorable night.

“I usually go with a group of friends. It’s less stress,” Bria said. “I go out to eat after the dance. I’m usually running late when I’m getting ready, so I don’t have time to eat before.”

For girls, finding a dress is one of the most important steps in the preparation. Junior Erica Pierce said that she likes sparkles, and the dress has to be strapless, but she also sets a budget.

“The price limit on my dress is $150 dollars,” Erica said.

Senior princess T’Aisya Squire spent almost $300 on two outfits for Homecoming: one for the parade and one for the dance.

“Trying to find a dress for Homecoming is stressful enough; finding two is crazy,” T’Aisya said.

Boys said they spend much less time getting ready for the big night.

“I have to get a haircut, but it only takes me 15 minutes to get ready,” junior Tim Minor said.

It takes weeks for staff and SGA members to transform the gym into a magical dance floor.

Staff and student government members spend countless hours planning and organizing the dance. Planning begins in August when the SGA discusses the theme. Junior class sponsor Allison Maupin is in charge of getting everything ready for the dance.

“I am behind the scenes. I am the lovely person who gets to deal with the bookkeeper and go through contracts,” Ms. Maupin said. “I make sure the administrative end goes well and our students do things to make sure everyone has fun.”

Sophomore class sponsor and English teacher JaNee Jones is in charge of preparations for the parade and dance.

“We have to set up ticket sales, figure out the theme, decorations, police, create a safe, fun environment since Varina is known for having the best Homecoming dance over every other high school,” Ms. Jones said.
