Column: ‘I’m Gone Make It’ unrealistic for most

by Dejah Winston

Everybody knows Drake. Got his big break as co-star of “Degrassi.” Kicked that to the side to jump off his rap career. Signed by Lil Wayne to Young Money, even made his own record label, OVOXO. All of this despite being a high school dropout at 15. But does that mean you should dropout?

Too many boys think they’re just as talented as Drake, so they make rap their priority. In their math books, they write beats made on garage band, and they have “studio time,” which is more than likely in their kitchen or in the corner of their bedroom.

“I’m gone make it” is the mindset, so they slack on school or completely stop caring about school.

Rappers who are serious about rapping should stay in school while they gain some experience and some material to showcase to keep their dreams of being famous alive. Obtaining a degree or even a high school diploma means you care enough and are dedicated enough to make sure you have a bright future.

What young gentlemen need to realize is that there are so many other things out there. They are exposed to so much, but so little at the same time. All they see in the media are celebrities and well-known athletes.

It all comes down to what is important, and that’s an education. If you need someone to look up to for motivation to succeed academically, look up to Drake, a successful rapper who decided to return to high school to get a diploma at the age of 25.
