For the first time in nearly a decade, the boys varsity basketball team (11-7) went to districts.
Although the Blue Devils lost in the first round of district play to the Hanover Hawks 95-83, they credit their season success to new leadership and longer practices.
“Our whole demeanor has been different,” senior point guard Brandon Wood said. “We want it more, and we show that we want it more.”
The extra practice hours, according to Brandon, have helped the team understand their jobs on the court and given them more success.
“Everybody knows their role,” Brandon said. “They do their best to fulfill their roles to the best of their abilities.”
Junior small forward Donovan Dowling said the team has begun to get together when they are not on the court.
“Once you get to know players off the court, you get to know them on the court, and you get to know what they’re capable of doing,” Donovan said.
Sophomore forward and center Javalais Wright said the team is competitive.
“Winning makes us feel great, and we know we have to keep the streak going,” Javalais said. “We don’t like to lose.”
Even though the team has had a winning season, sophomore shooting guard Tony Lofton said he hopes the team will continue to improve.
Ultimately, the team said it is pleased with its performance this season.
“I wouldn’t change anything because I feel that my team is good because we’re all brothers,” Javalais said.
