Coach preps players for varsity

by Taylor Cerone

The buzzer sounds, signaling the end of the first half. The JV boys basketball team leads the game.

When the team returns to the floor, they win their second game under new Head Coach David Lewis.

“Coach Lewis knows a lot about basketball, and he’s played before,” sophomore forward Trimane Howell said.

Coach Lewis began the season as assistant coach to Head Coach Clifton Robinson, Jr., who left the team after its first game against Henrico. Coach Lewis remained to work with the team that is comprised mostly of first-time players.

“Our biggest competition is ourselves, not the other team,” Coach Lewis said.

This is Coach Lewis’ first year with the team (3-13), but it is not his first year coaching.  In practice, Coach Lewis drills the team on skills they need to improve.

“He’s teaching us what to do in certain situations,” sophomore small forward Michel Jones said.

Under Coach Lewis, the team began to work together and play harder.

“During the first half of the season, we took 20 and 30-point losses.  Against the same teams in the second half of the season, we were losing by ten or less,” assistant coach Michael Wilson said.

Coach Lewis’ main goal for the team is to prepare them for varsity.

“Winning and losing is not that important on a JV level.  It’s about playing time,” Coach Lewis said.
