The Student Government Association under the guidance of sponsor Andrew Givens is changing the way it works. It is now a student-run organization.
“The students take ownership,” Mr. Givens said. “My job is to help out if they need me.
One senior class student government goal for 100 students to participate in Challenge Day, a program that brings students together to end bullying.
To raise money for Challenge Day, the senior class student government held a Chick-fil-A fundraiser in September and October.
“I’m really excited to see how Challenge Day is going to bring students together,” junior Tyesha Williams said. “I’ve seen the show on MTV, and I can’t wait until it comes to Varina.”
Another SGA goal is to build school spirit by selling class T-shirts, getting students involved in the school’s pep rallies and organizing Homecoming and spring spirit week.
“Without SGA, students would have no say in how their school should be run,” senior Paige Garrison said. “The members of SGA are the leaders of the school.”
SGA members earned community service hours on Fee Night by registering students and parents to vote and by helping teachers set up their classrooms before the start of school.
“SGA also gives me the opportunity to earn plenty of community service hours,” junior Jadasia Ferrell said. “I like all the community service and being able to build up our Varina Nation.”
