So long to hall passes, school lunches and parent supervision. Goodbye high school. Say hi to making a schedule, cooking meals and paying for college.
Seniors count down the days until graduation when they walk across the stage into a new realm of responsibilities.
The notions of freedom and independence from parents, teachers and administrators overpower the fact that college is a big deal. Now, when little Johnny makes a bad decision, his administrator doesn’t handle it; the police officer down the street does. No longer does he spend the day in the principal’s office; instead, he spends the night in a jail cell.
High school comes with responsibilities, but college comes with a whole new level of responsibilities.
Here, I’ll break it down. High school teachers send SchoolSpace messages to remind students of deadlines. Professors post due dates once and expect assignments to be on time. While their children are in secondary schools, parents usually pay for the residence of their child. In August, a student loan will be paying for that place; mommy and daddy won’t be paying for that one. And four years of your life will be spent staying up late cramming the night before, paying bills and working off that dreaded freshmen fifteen. College is no joke. It’s a completely different monster.
Quite frankly, students may regret wishing for high school to be over. Trace Adkins’ lyrics in “You’re Gonna Miss This” say it all: “You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast.” So, revel in the homework that drives you insane, be the first in the cafeteria lunch line and be glad your mom only took your phone for a day because soon you will be wishing for all of it again.
Peace, adios, sayonara and farewell to high school. Hola, aloha and howdy to college.
