Slow start equals big finish for soccer

 by Jacinda Jones

This is not the year for varsity boys soccer (1-9).

Junior captain and midfielder Xavier Young is in his third season of play for the Blue Devils. Usually the team gets five or six wins during the season.

“We had never lost to Highland Springs while I’ve been here,” senior left striker Johnny White said.

Xavier and senior co-captain and defender Cody McDaniel said the team needs to improve on passing, ball control, communication on the field, scoring and one touches.

“We are still making careless mistakes which lead to goals by the opposition,” Coach Keith Stainker said. “If we can reduce these mistakes in the second half of the season, we can improve. We are a better team than last year, even though our record at this point does not show that.”

Johnny said the past season was better because the team had players with more skills.

“Although the season has not gone as we had hoped, we will continue to work hard to improve during the second half of the season,” Coach Stainker said.
