Six games into the season, the girls varsity soccer team is 1-5. Although they try to pull things together during practice, they said things just don’t click on the field.
“I feel like we have the potential to win games. We just don’t know how to put it together on the field,” senior midfielder Harley Hicks said.
The Lady Blue Devils got their only win against rival Highland Springs.
“Our game against Highland Springs was our best because we knew it was our rival team, and we needed to win to prove something to ourselves. We definitely left it all on the field,” senior left defender Danielle Childress said.
“This season has been a bit of a struggle because we’ve lost a lot of talented girls over the past two years, but we’re working hard,” Danielle said. “We may not win very many games, but we at least try to show every team we play how much we have improved.”
Although the team is struggling, they feel they can get it together,
“We are slowly starting to improve more on our skills and work together better as a team,” junior right defender Jacinda Jones said. “We don’t lose as badly as we did compared to previous years.”
The Lady Blue Devils feel lucky to have a new goalie, sophomore Taylor Rengers.
“She’s fantastic,” Danielle said. This is her first year in the Varina soccer program and she’s kind of our hero.”
The team is preparing for more wins in the second half of the season.
“If we work as hard as I know we can, we can have a better half of the season,” senior captain and center midfielder Brigitte Wendel said. “The girls have trouble with keeping their head in the game and not giving up. If we can learn how to not give up when they score one goal and work hard, then we can have a better season.”
