Column: Zimmerman innocent until proven guilty

by Ashley Edwards

Skittles. Sweet tea. Brown skin. A hoodie.

His name was Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old who was shot and killed on February 26 allegedly by George Zimmerman, 28, who was charged a month-hand-a-half later with second-degree murder and released on $150,000 bond. Mr. Zimmerman hasn’t gone to trial, but he has already been tried in the court of public opinion.

Many people are following this high-profile case and, rightly so, many of us are angry.  You’ve probably seen everything from online petitions to celebrities posting pictures of themselves in dark hoodies on Twitter. Those seeking justice for the teen have held rallies throughout the country. Should people assume Mr. Zimmerman is guilty of second-degree murder without hearing all of the facts?

Police released 911 calls weeks after the incident, shocking many people in the community who believe this was a hate crime.  The media has presented extensive information about this case, but until the case is heard in a court of law, we must reserve judgment.

Many people automatically think Mr. Zimmerman is guilty, but until lawyers present the evidence in court, we cannot truly know the truth of this tragic event.
