On game day, athletes dream of hearing screaming fans, ringing cowbells and the band playing the fight, but the reality is most of them only hear the wind blowing and crickets chirping. Students and faculty need to make an effort to support all Blue Devil athletics, not just the king of sports, football.
It is true, the football team has a longstanding legacy, but other teams are having success as well. For example, golfer Billy Stoneman made a hole-in-one during his match against Tucker, and the girls volleyball team won its match against Armstrong. The problem is few fans witnessed either of these accomplishments.
Poor fan support can lead to more than low morale. Many teams struggle to cover basic costs. Greater fan support could start a chain reaction leading to higher ticket sales and more revenue for the entire athletic department.
