Senior continues Key Club tradition

By Danielle Childress

Attending weekly club meetings, writing monthly newsletters and planning frequent District Board events keep senior Katie Jones constantly on the move in the name of service.

Katie is the Capital District Key Club Lieutenant Governor for Division 4C.

Key Club is an international service organization, which is broken into districts. The Capital District includes all the clubs in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Delaware. Within the district are divisions. Each division has a Lieutenant Governor to act as a liaison between the clubs and the district.

“Division 4C is the division to be,” Katie said.

Division 4C includes eight area high schools that Katie tracks during the year.

“I visit clubs, put together newsletters and hold meetings to train officers,” Katie said.

She also is the chairperson of the committee on member services for the district. The committee creates materials for membership recruitment and training.

Katie said that Key Club is often a focus of her time and effort.

“They recommend we put school first, then family and friend activities and then Key Club, but I tend to favor Key Club,” Katie said. “Say it’s the fifteenth of the month, and my newsletter is due. I do that first, make sure it’s in by midnight and then do my schoolwork.”

It takes Katie about four hours to do her two-page monthly newsletter for the division.

Former Key Club advisor Mary Dick said that Katie’s dedication is admirable.

“Some of our Lieutenant Governors have been reluctant leaders, but Katie is one that sought it out and made a conscious decision to go that direction. She’s enthusiastic, organized and hardworking,” Ms. Dick said.

Katie is the fifth Lieutenant Governor from Varina in the last five years. That legacy is beneficial to the club.

“We’re more aware of the district events and the district project. We have more input,” club advisor Amy Davis said.

Ms. Dick expects the tradition will continue.

“The involvement encourages us to keep participating on the district level because we know what’s going on and try to support our Lieutenant Governors. It helps other schools in the district and on the international level see Varina in a different light: see us shine,” Ms. Dick said.

Although the position is a lot of responsibility, Katie said she enjoys it.

“Key Club is my life,” she said.
