Lesson Summary

Do you ever wonder what it looks like when people work out around the world? That was the question that Mrs. Bernheart’s 5th graders wanted to answer! Students worked in collaborative groups to research the country of their choosing for their school’s International Night and then they used their knowledge to create tabata workout videos to showcase their newfound knowledge. Their tabata videos will be used as Brain Breaks for their classmates throughout the school year!

Rating:Ideal – Explanation: This lesson fits into the ideal category for research and information fluency. Students were given the authentic task of teaching their school community about a country of their interest while also creating a tabata style workout video. They then had to assemble and synthesize all of the information that they learned within the assignment parameters. All research was self-directed and students came up with their own questions.

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: This lesson fits into the approaching category for communication and collaboration. Students worked in self-selected groups and created a product that could be used outside of their classroom walls and by everyone in their school community.

Students worked through how to best showcase their information and how to fully explain what they learned to someone else in a clear and concise way. They also had to decide elements (exercise, music, aesthetics) to put into their workout video to portray their country in an authentic light.

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: This lesson fits into the ideal category for creativity and innovation. Students had to synthesize existing and self-generated knowledge from their research in order to create a product that was meaningful, authentic and informative for the members of their school community. They used various digital tools and combined them in a way that lead to a cohesive and creative final product.
