Lesson Summary
Students worked in groups of 3 or 4 to create a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). They were tasked with developing a name, slogan, mission statement, long-term goals, etc as well as choosing one work of art by a Spanish or Latin American artist that represented the goals and themes of their NGO. Students participated in a class-wide NGO expo and silent art auction. Each group presented the NGO to their classmates, and all students formed questions for each NGO. Once the expo ended, students participated in a Q & A session and responded to the questions their classmates wrote. Finally, students were given $500,000 dollars to bid on their favorite work of art. The NGO with the highest amount of bids won a prize, and a donation was made in their name to a real NGO of their choosing.
TIPC Ratings
Research & Information Fluency
Rating:Developing – Explanation: Students were given guiding questions to help them prepare their presentations, but they conducted their research using various digital tools and were working toward the authentic task of forming their own original non-profit organization.
Communication & Collaboration
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students did not choose their own groups because their class is set up in communities, and students work together as a team for the entire marking period. However, students were given the opportunity to create their own roles and norms within the group and worked toward the authentic task of creating their own organization and choosing artwork for their silent auction that connected with the goals and mission of their NGO.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students were able to choose their resources for creating their presentations for the expo. Students formed questions for their peers as they toured the expo and were given the chance to respond to questions written for them. Students completed a survey at the end of the project allowing them to reflect on their collaboration within their group as well as to reflect on what they had learned from the other presentations. Students had the opportunity to share their criticism and provide ideas for how to improve the project in the future.
Creativity & Innovation
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students had the opportunity to identify a specific problem within the areas of environment, human rights, access to equal education, or poverty. Students developed a multi-faceted approach to identifying and solving the problem through the creation and goals of their original NGO.
