Summary
Students in this lesson studied the candidates’ views for the March primary elections and designed a campaign to increase voter turnout and combat apathy in young voters. They researched, collaborated on group analysis and project design, and designed a variety of creative products to get their message out to a target audience of their voting-eligible student peers.

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Encouraging others to vote is a timely and authentic task, as this project takes place in an active election cycle. The students developed the questions to guide their research – choosing the topics/issues they deemed important. They chose the websites and other sources for research
Communication & Collaboration
Rating: Developing – Explanation: Teacher-assigned groups, but the students did communicate using digital tools, specifically Google Docs to coordinate efforts.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: The students had to critically analyze the candidates and the motivations behind voter turnout, and make their plans to address the problem accordingly. They studied trends in previous elections and made predictions about the election’s outcome as part of their campaign plans.
Creativity & Innovation
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Each group created several pieces of original, meaningful work – sometimes movies, others infographics, to disseminate their message on 3 or more avenues of social media. The authenticity of the task is high.
