Inferencing with the Infamous Robin Hood

This lesson is for : Grade 5:

Summary

In order to get students to apply their knowledge of drawing conclusions and making inferences and enhance their vocabulary, we came up with a fantastic vocabulary project. Working with their reading groups, students were provided a familiar text they had been reading and working with in small groups. Each group took 5-6 vocabulary words from the book to create a google slides presentation. What was really great was that the leveled text students used, shared some of the same vocabulary words and had the same folktale about Robin Hood. Students then took these vocabulary words and created “clues” on google slides to help their classmates “draw conclusions” on what the word could be. To help provide clues to their classmates, students used Britannica to find images to add to their slide show as well as created their own phrases. If students were not able to figure out what the word was, groups then took this opportunity to teach the class the new word.

TIPC Ratings

Research & Information Fluency

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students had to research and understand the meaning of their word to successfully find an image or phrase to provide “clues” to help students guess their word.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students worked together to create a google slide show to present their words to the class. They had to collaborate and discuss which word each group member would be responsible for and communicate the best ways to present their project to the class.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students working on their project had to think critically to be able to describe their word, without providing the definition of the word. Other students had to think critically to “draw conclusions” on what they word was that was being presented to them.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students had to think creatively to describe some of the words they were given. For example one group was given the word “dauntless” to provide clues for students to draw conclusions.
