Summary

Students research the different parts of the pumpkin life cycle using trade books, PebbleGo, and OneSearch. Students visit the pumpkin patch where they receive first-hand experience with identifying the different parts of the pumpkin life cycle. They are able to capture images of the different stages of the life cycle using the class iPads. Upon arrival back at school, students use the ChatterPix app to bring their images to life and explain the life cycle.

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students constructed their own questions through the use of a KWL chart. Students were provided an opportunity to research on PebbleGo, OneSearch, and by looking at and listening to trade books. Students had to apply their research in the field by searching for examples of each stage of the life cycle. Students used ChatterPix to powerfully display their findings. The teacher posted their finished videos to her class blog so that others could interact with the information.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students worked in small groups to create a video to explain the life cycle of a pumpkin. Using ChatterPix, the students communicated their understanding of the life cycle. The teacher then posted their finished videos to the blog. The students reflected on their finished products after viewing them as a class.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students generated and responded to their own questions through the use of a class KWL chart. Students were tasked with locating examples of each stage of the pumpkin life cycle and used the camera on the iPad to document their findings. They then used ChatterPix to elaborate on the different stages they saw in the pumpkin patch.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students created meaningful, original work to showcase the life cycle of a pumpkin. They had the freedom to take and use any pictures they wanted from their field trip. Students could also embellish their pumpkins in ChatterPix. They reflected on their finished videos.
