Sensory Room Project – 8200

Summary

Students in the Teacher Cadet program researched, designed, and implemented a Sensory Room that can be used for students in the ID Exceptional Education program to “self-calm.” This type of room has been shown to be of benefit for students who are agitated or who need a calming time out for any reason. The room is currently set-up and is being used at Godwin High School.

TIPC Ratings

This project is in the Approaching range for Research & Information Fluency. The teacher provided a framework where students could assemble and direct their own research to address an authentic task (designing and building a sensory room for student use). This task had immediate benefits for the ID students and for Godwin High School.

This project is in the Approaching range for Communication & Collaboration. The teacher facilitated her students engaging in meaningful communication and purposeful collaboration. Students had to work with each other, divide the necessary tasks, and work toward the group goal. They researched, planned, bought supplies, and assembled the room as a group.

This project is in the Approaching range for Communication & Collaboration. The students had to ask appropriate questions during their research and interviews with experts. They used the information they gathered to decide the best approach to create the room given the space and resource limitations they faced.

This project is in the Approaching range for Creativity & Innovation. Students had to analyze the information from research and the experiences of others to create a physical, real-world space that would meet the needs of students at the school.
